I prefer glossy and went out of my way to find one when I last purchased a LCD monitor, a HP 2210m in 2010. I also paid an extra $40-50 over what some comparable matte screens cost at the time.
The funny thing is, before the LCD revolution really took off around 2006/7, all the flat screen CRT monitors we were using back then were in effect glossy screens as the flat glass screens did not have a matte finish.
I had a very nice Viewsonic 17' flat screeen CRT and couldnt stand the blurry effect that matte LCD screens caused on images, especially text, at that time.
As someone has already noted, the current matte finishes seem to have improved quite a bit and arent near as bad as they were years ago (as far as blurring text). Judging by what I seen recently at a computer store, I may consider a matte finish on my next LCD purchase.
You get used to the glossy finish and don't notice any reflections quite quickly (just like the flat CRT screens everyone used). Although, there are some situations where the lighting in an office or other situations might cause too much glare on a glossy finish, so one might have to go matte.
