Monitors: A light matte coating.
Photo paper: about even
Cars: Glossy, by far.
Kittens: Matte. (haven't seen the former)

What others?

Glossy for me, it's more clear and crisp. My last monitor was matte, and it always looked dull or blurred.

*disclaimer* I have a glossy QNIX 2510 now.

I prefer glossy and went out of my way to find one when I last purchased a LCD monitor, a HP 2210m in 2010. I also paid an extra $40-50 over what some comparable matte screens cost at the time.

The funny thing is, before the LCD revolution really took off around 2006/7, all the flat screen CRT monitors we were using back then were in effect glossy screens as the flat glass screens did not have a matte finish.

I had a very nice Viewsonic 17' flat screeen CRT and couldn’t stand the blurry effect that matte LCD screens caused on images, especially text, at that time.

As someone has already noted, the current matte finishes seem to have improved quite a bit and aren’t near as bad as they were years ago (as far as blurring text). Judging by what I seen recently at a computer store, I may consider a matte finish on my next LCD purchase.

You get used to the glossy finish and don't notice any reflections quite quickly (just like the flat CRT screens everyone used). Although, there are some situations where the lighting in an office or other situations might cause too much glare on a glossy finish, so one might have to go matte.

as nice as gloss can be. the reflection is a deal breaker. light matte is best. just enough to stop the reflection.

I prefer not to see myself in the monitor, so matte it is.

I enjoy satin wood instead of a heavy gloss varnish. Apply a linseed oil rub. Work the wood down to 320 grit, rub with steel wool, and apply a nice coat of Johnson's paste wax. emmmmmmm.

I second this notion. Blinds you as you walk around with early morning Sunlight.

Jokes aside, Matte is far more pratical unless you have good control of light in your room/study.

I got my setup in a dark living room, desk big enough to have its own area code and my 24'' matte monitor suddenly looks pathetically small on it but a glossy panel in the 27''+ range would be so sweet in here.

Glossy is dead sexy with the right lighting.

If you have the right lighting I prefer clear.

If your sitting somewhere, where theres tons of lightsources bouncing off your screen, matte all the way.

Gonna vote clear/glossy.

Prefer glossy/clear. Reflections are a non-issue for me (in home environment at least) where I can always shut the blinds, re-arrange lighting, etc.

Some of the newer Korean monitors (with AH-IPS panels) have a PDC coating (plasma deposition coating) which offer the clarity of glossy with much reduced reflections. Bought a 27" 1440p monitor with that and am impressed (Yamakasi DS270).

Still have a full glossy panel though and that has more of a 'wow factor' to it, where many of my friends just say 'wow, gotta get one of these'.

Glossy or mild matte coating.

A rough antiglare coating makes photo editing impossible. You can't see the actual pixels.

just bought a new Chromebook C720 and those use a matte screen. a glossy screen makes anything almost useless when sun and/or glare is a factor.

I've gamed on my Catleap in pitch black and just the light from the monitor was enough to see reflections. THERE IS NO ESCAPING!!!!

Matte.

I don't like reflections on my screen when I'm gaming or watching pr0n.

It is difficult for me to comprehend why somebody would pick glossy; I know the reasons but I just can't put myself in those shoes. I'm sure some people would say the same thing about matte. (I'm typing this from a glossy laptop screen, which is OK most of the time, when I put the effort into angling it well and sitting in a good spot.)

Obviously Matte.

I thought glossy was good after using it for 5-6 years, then got a matte IPS monitor. So much easier on the eyes and without the annoying reflections
