First off, I have been a long time lurker and an ocassional poster..but I just seem to be loosing my login credentials so i got to start all over again each time !!!!

I have gone thru most of the matterss threads in OT; but wanted to see if anybody had anything new to say !!!

Alright, I was out mattress shopping last weekend and was utterly baffelled by the fact that one manufacturer - namely Sealy can actually keep distributing mattress with all kinds of brand names to various retail stores with no way for the average consumer to make an educated comparison or decision.

Obviously each store salesman claims that the model they carry cannot be compared to the competition; citing factors ranging from nationwide presence to the "not-a-warehouse-but-a-specialist" baloney !!!

And then comes the technology - viscous memory foam , intercoiled springs, no of springs, edge support and what not !!

After going thru about 4 stores, 5 mattress brands and all the above mattress industry buzz-words; one salesman gives me the absolute low down on how to decide when I told him my mattress shopping is turning to be quite a nightmare. "Yeah, its confusing. So is life. You got to pick one and live with it " !!!!!

Well anyways has anyone out here heard of the brand "King Koil" ?? I came across one that felt awfully nice (has the viscous memory foam inside the pillowtop) and the queen with the box spring is being retailed for 750 !! The same store has another mattress made by king koil retailing for 3500 !!! makes me think that maybe the brand is pretty decent.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

You will get what you pay for. I've tried several beds and spent thousands of dollars on "the best". If you can afford it, a sleep number is the way to go. All beds with springs will eventually sag and conform to your body. They will create pressure points and not give you good support. The only other bed I'd consider is the tempurpedic (foam) but I'm not satisfied that it won't eventually conform also. An air mattress is the only one that won't. When my back really hurts, I sleep on an air mattress (the blow up camping kind). After a week it doesn't hurt anymore. Once I have the $$$ I'll be buying a sleep number.

Make sure that when you purchase your mattress that you get some type of 30-day warranty associated with it. You can tell when the matress you purchased is the right one only after you've actually slept in it. Lying on top of a mattress in a public store for a couple of minutes should NOT be the determining factor on which mattess you're gonna keep.

My wife and I recently bought a mattress with a 30-day "try before you keep" warranty. If we didn't like the mattress because we couldn't sleep well, we could exchange it with another comparable mattress without any hassle.

Fortunately, I think we picked a good one. But you never know with mattresses until you really know.

I will defenitely need to check about the 30 day bring back policy !! I thought this was non-existant due to hygenic reasons. Anyways, anyone hear anything good about king koil...

Best bet is to locate a matress that feels comfotable for you both in price and lying on it. If it does not feel comfortable - pass it up.
This is a negative test, not a positive test.

There may also be local manufacturers/no-name brand that can do the job for you at much less than the brand prices. Most of the technology for the Sealy/Searta beds is widely copied.

the type of matresses that you see advertices on TV (Sleep Number, etc) are made of entirely different materials and design. Less competition, you pay for the "technology" (if it is there). There prices is about the same as the high end units.

Most matresses will come with a warranty. Do not expect to get more than 1-2 years use past that warrenty.

Wherever you end up buying your mattress from, treat the transaction like a car deal. The final price you pay is very negotiable on mattresses. Don't pay the price on the tag.

Agreed. When I sold mattresses at Monkey Ward in the late 80's, I always got a kick out of people deciding which mattress to purchase. They'd either:

1) stand to the side and press down on the mattress with their hand (to check firmness)
or
2) sit on the bed and bounce a little

If I could tell the customer had a sense of humor, I'd ask them if that was how they slept (sitting) I rarely had anyone actually lay on the mattress to test it. I had a few customers tell me they were too embarrassed to lay on the mattress in public. Whatever.

i have had no trouble actually lying down on a mattress in the store......

and yeah Tiles2Tech I was thinking the same too. When I showed the salesman some interest in the King Koil...he knocked $200 right off the back..that kinda threw me off !!! So here I am thinking that maybe I can get him to lower the prie some more.

I told him that I would be back later next weekend; so what i am trying to do know is to find out more about the manufacturer....i have heard plenty about Sealy, Serta, Sterns and Foster and the like. But I havent heard much about King Koil....

Very true, the original tag price on my full mattress set was insane, $500+. They had it marked down 'on sale' for $399. Well apparently they can move on the prices quite a bit, I ended up paying $225 out the door, promising to pick it up myself and pay cash helped in the negotiations.

Just a little tid bit - Sealy and all other matress companies just distribute matresses with alphanumeric names, the stores do all of the naming so that you can't compare prices. This is how the matress business works - I'd be willing to bet that every store you went to had a price match policy too.

mattress shopping is the biggest pain in the ass, I had an easier time buying my car. the stores do have a book listing what their model is called by other stores, so if you can get that you're golden.

I will never regret spending as much money as I did on my mattress....definitely treat it like an auto transaction, you won't regret the purchase!

Is this true? Do all stores have this book? Does anyone here have it?

I second this. Take a look at a Select Comfort mattress (www.selectcomfort.com). They have a store locator on their website.

I hate my memory foam bed!!!!!! Hard as a rock when I bought it, now it is soft as a baby's behind. Absolutley no support. I paid $1400 for a piece of crap. I went to buy a latex foam bed and was talked into a memory foam bed. Big mistake.

You can always ask the member Yeeny. She's been on her back on hundreds of mattresses and i'm sure she can qualify as an expert.

Do you have any of those 1-800 places near you like 1-800 mattress or Sleepy's?

You can negotiate prices with them. One time I wanted to buy a specific bed for my son and they quoted me a price. I told them it was too expensive so they asked me how much I would pay for it. I told them 1/2 and they agreed. YMMV.

lol we just bought a new mattress set about 2 months ago and i made my husband lay on it with me in the positions that we sleep in. I was lounging for about 15 minutes on each mattress.. at one point one of the salespeople from a different dpt came by and said 'get a room'. my husband was so embarassed he wouldnt test out anymore.
