Wow I can't imagine paying several grand let alone 7 grand for a mattress, is that really what they go for now days? I can think of so many other things I could do with 7 grand, such as a small solar installation, or completely finishing the basement. Or one hell of a serious server upgrade lol. But I would not even want to spend that much on server equipment, at least not in one shot.

No, not even close. Those are luxurious things that you only buy if it's affordable. I bought a King mattress with box springs for just over $1k a couple years ago and it was perfect. Really miss that mattress, sold it a couple months ago when I moved.

"organic" beds? Made from steel springs forged by vegan blacksmiths?

Oh, "all latex"... so, not just "natural latex", but also "organic latex". Were they "free-range" too?

With springs forged by dark elves in mount DOOOOOOOOOM.

Watch out for all the fakes out there though, if you want to be sure, remove a spring and put it in a roaring fire, you should see the model number (in elvish) inscribed on it when it gets hot enough. The fakes just start to deform and don't show anything.

Yeah, they made a big deal about it. Getting the organic latex cost $1000 more than the regular latex bed. Sounds like a bunch of hippie stuff, but it was only a thousand more so I got it. They had all the certifications on their website:

Latex is the shit, but I wouldn't dive into that price range. All my pillows are Talalay Latex though, fucking things are almost indestructible.

We got a Serta iSeries king with pillowtop (no they do not get warmer) a couple years back for under $1k. It's a perfect combination of stable (it's a monster) while being soft on the back and even my picky wife loves it. I'm not sure why anyone would need to spend much more.

Anyway, it worked out that they begged for our business after we showed great interest at the store and still walked out the door because we weren't ready to spend $1k+. Left a number in case it went on sale and they called us on the phone a few days later and just offered us a better price. So showing that being hung up on the price tag and walking away is one way to avoid paying retail. Same with car buying.

I've got a Sealy foam mattress. Its nice BUT, not deep enough for most fitted sheets. They keep pulling off.
I recommend flat sheets and some sort of clip.

My mattress is only a couple of months old now, last 2 have both been floor models. My Simmons world class, was $1000, my new one, $499. This one is much better, but its also a firm where as my Simmons was a plush pillow top.

I bought a set of Tempur Cloud mattresses years ago, with the Tempur support structure that goes underneath it (with adjustable zones for hard/medium/soft all over the place, at least 20 zones under each mattress). I never understood why people would spend this kind of money on a mattress until I was playing around in a furniture store with my wife and she wanted to try out the mattress section. After trying this one we both agreed instantly that this is what we would get.

Now about the price - people keep mentioning prices in this thread but it really depends where you buy it. My in laws bought the same set of mattresses for something like 40% less than I did in a big city area, whereas they found a rural outlet in a different country that was desperate to make sales.

This mattress set plus my wife introducing me to down filled duvets (the really heavy ones) - I mean it's like sleeping in a gentle hug. I love it.

I went and bought another mattress this weekend. (I have many bedrooms, so I can experiment with different beds.)

Went to the Nest Bedding showroom in Orange County to test out the Alexander Hybrid due to all the raving positive reviews online. It was complete crap! All the reviews are lies. That's the bed they are pushing because they get some sort of referral bonus.

Ended up ordering the Q3 ($2500) which is an organic all latex model. While it wasn't discounted, I asked if the $200 coupon that applied to the Alexander Hybrid could be used on the Q3. The salesperson said no, but then gave me $250 off just for asking.

(note: never used them. just saw their ad about mattress stores are ripoffs and here's why)

I have said it before and I will say it again. Buy the cheapest mattress you find comfortable and call it a day. I don't sleep any better on my current mattress than I did on my cheaper one. My next one will most likely be a Novaform from $399 from Costco. People still feel they need to spend $4000 on a mattress, hence why they keep selling them. I know I will possibly take a beating here for saying this, so keep wasting money folks.

I don't know man, I have a lot of neck and shoulder problems and I bought a serta memory foam with adjustable base and it has drastically increased my restfulness.

I hate mattress shopping. The entire industry colluded to make sure there are so many models and variations that you can't easily compare or price match. At least with car shopping, you have a general idea of what the dealer's invoice prices and incentives are. With mattress shopping, I feel like I was just throwing numbers out there into a void.

I went into the store and found an adjustable base that I liked ($1700) and an acceptable mattress ($5500), so $7200 total.

I asked the salesperson for his best deal for the two and he said $6800. I then countered with $6000 and he said, "You got it." No hesitation, no bargaining; he just accepted. And then on top of that, he threw in freebies without me even asking.

I left with the disconcerting feeling that maybe I paid too much with no way of knowing if I got a good deal or not. There's no truecar or edmunds for me to find out. The markups in that industry must be incredibly high. But again, I have no clue if they are. If anything, I'm glad it's over.

I went mattress shopping on a holiday once and if I recall correctly, the $4,000 mattress we liked was on sale for $2,400.

I think you could have gotten the mattress for $5,000 or less.

I know man, if you sleep just as well on a $1000 mattress over a $4000, then who wouldn't choose the $1000? I know everyone is different, but I firmly believe in buying the cheapest that works for each person. I am jazzed with my latest one and the $499 price, I needed it at the time for back issues and didn't want to wait for the Costco Novaform to go on sale at $399, which it did last month. So for $100 more I got delivery and haul away basically.

For something I'm going to spend 1/3rd of my life on, I don't mind spending some extra money.

That said, I spent $800 from Costco for a memory foam queen and it's served me well

Purchased a Casper Mattress about a year ago or maybe 2 for $900. The only thing is it needed some kind of semi-flat platform to put it on. That leads to a different kind of a bed frame with maybe a bucky board wanting for a better term to call it.

Heh, I find it funny because ATOT is so divided here.

1/2 are saying "Meh" I have no problem sleeping on a $200 - $800 mattress. Serves its function just fine without all the marketing and salesman bullshit.

Other 1/2 are saying "OMG IT'S SOOOO WORTH IT OMG!!! I have never slept so good in my life and it's so important!"

I'm more willing to bet the 2nd half are trying to fool themselves into perceiving it as a worthy purchase more than anything heh. Placebo affect

People still think warranties matter, of course if one person says a warranty helped them, then it must be important. Marketing bullshit is king in mattresses.

I used to stay in the same two hotels traveling for work often enough I knew most of the employees by name and frequently got upgraded to the same room. Then one trip I noticed I slept like shit in both hotels and was notably more tired. Same with the trip after that. I even asked the hotel manager if they had changed out their mattresses. Nope - it was just that I was used to the better sleep I was getting at home on my new latex mattress. We used to find hotel mattresses fairly comparable to ours. Not so much now. There is also a middle ground between cheap and high priced\marketed BS

I slept like the dead on both of my trips to Vegas in the last few years. One had a complete brick of a mattress, the other was so so. There is more to a good nights sleep than the mattress. Alcohol helps me sleep, cause that's why I go to Vegas, to get plastered.

Mattresses are such a personal preference thing. You gotta go to the store and try one first.

Just make sure to get a name brand that you can be fairly confident will still be in business 5 years from now.

I would be very fearful to buy a "bed in a box" from one of those startups, as there is a good chance that they won't be still be around by the time your mattress starts sagging a few years from now.
