No doubt they're making a killing on the margins, but LOL at people who say a $5 pair from Walmart is the same!

There are a few things in life that just aren't worth going cheap over, one of those is your eyes IMHO.

How am I cheaping out on my eyes? Uv protection? Check. Stays in place while running and bicycling? Check. No discomfort after 5 hours on the bicycle? Check.

Keep trying to justify your purchase. In the end you are working your life away for frivolous junk.

Not all UV protection is equal. Many chinese brands are lying about their protection levels as well.

I picked up a pair of Maui Jim's yesterday at the outlet mall in Carlsbad. They are polarized and extremely light weight. Paid $179 for them and they were having a 10% off everything in the store sale on top of that.

This is the one I bought. Very happy with them so far. I was looking at Ray Ban because those are what I've had for years but these were the same price but much lighter. They fit my face and don't slide down my nose or move around at all while I'm wearing them. It barely feels like I'm wearing glasses when I have them on but they really cut down on glare when driving.

I think I have the very same ones (MJ Sandy Beach Bronze), bought them at Clearly Contacts for $150 (~$175 with taxes and shipping). My first pair that I paid more than $50, and I'm really happy with them. I really wanted polarized for driving, bronze optics is really nice too, they are feather light and fit really comfortably. Looks are a matter of taste, but I like sporty ones like these.
It's true that I'm also more careful with them, but nowhere near the OP's paranoia of not wearing them. So far I've had them for about a year, no scratches or anything, knock-knock...

Pricey, but great quality and great customer service, they will fix practically anything.

I don't have all the stats on it, but they gave us a tour of their facilities during an on-site we had. They had a pretty nifty testing facility and showed us some of the tests they did. That piece of "plastic" with "UV" protection from Walmart has some protection, but not nearly the same amount/quality as the MJ's. If it cost them $25 on average to make, what do you think the cost is, and what corners were cut to make that $15 pair from Target? Feel free to Google the topic and view the articles on WebMD and the Mayo Clinic for reference.

You've never put a pair on, then. I spent almost $5k for Lasik, what's another $200-300 on a pair of sunglasses? There is no brand that can compete with the optics quality of MJ's - period. Not Bolle, Oakley or Ray-ban. Your cheap sunglasses have worse polarization on them than 3D glasses.

I have a few pair of cheap sunglasses for biking but they don't compare at all to the coatings they use on better sunglasses like Maui Jim's. These cut glare so it is pretty much nonexistent and I don't squint at all. Cheap sunglasses don't do a very good job at cutting glare and if they do they cut out clarity and light too much.

Same thing with motorcycle visors. I bought a tinted (smoke) shield for my Shoei RF1100 helmet when I bought it because the more expensive spectra shields were not available when the helmet was first released but they are totally worth the extra money (and they cost about $100). The smoke shield is dark and you can't see as well even in bright daylight. The Spectra shield is like a mirror finish from the outside but the view isn't as dark as the smoke shield plus there is no glare or strain on the eyes.

The coatings make a huge difference.

That smoke shield is less than half what the Spectra shield costs.

I'm in the Ray-Ban camp, for both prescription and sunglasses.

I've owner cheapos, Oakleys, Bole, and nothing has come close to the quality/service of Ray-Ban. I'll have to give Maui Jim a shot.

Love Ray Bans, but their classic styles (e.g. Wayfarers, Aviators) are base-curve 6-ish. I "need" 8. Their more modern designs I find to be meh.

At least Maui Jims are made in the USA.

Did you get gray or yellow lenses? I can't stand the yellow.

All 3 of mine are grey. But I want to get a yellow pair for winter so I can keep them on at night when I'm not carrying the case with me. They're see-through though, which means they don't make It difficult for others to see where one's eyes are. Ahem.

I haven't had good luck with Ray-Ban fixing glasses other than selling me lenses at about $40 a pop (non-polarized) and me having to wait like a month to ship from overseas

That said, I prefer Ray-Ban styling. I don't like much of Maui Jim's, but my friends and family swear by them.

I am wearing New Wayfarers now. I wore the original Wayfarers and Small Aviators in high school (late 80's). Throughout college I went to more of the rectangle looking style.

I bought a pair of cheap sunglasses at a boat show (my good pair fell into the water when the bridge to a yacht deck started collapsing).

The fuckers had different polarity in each lens.
