I'm interested to know who is going to upgraded to Mavericks when it is released shortly, and your way of doing it, clean install or as an upgrade.

If you could do the poll and then comment below with your reasons that would be appreciated!

In the past I have directly upgraded from Leopard -> Snow Leopard -> Lion and then a clean install back to SL as Lion was undesirable on my 2008 MBP but I'm not 100% sure how I want to do it this time around.

Since my SSD died, and my new 10.8 install is a clean one anyway, my Mavericks install will effectively be a clean install.

Probably should have asked why people wouldn't upgrade, I doubt the price is the issue, so perhaps hardware compatibility for those on older models?

Are you going with the 840 again Eug?

I'm putting an SSD in my 2008 Macbook Unibody. I might upgrade but it depends on whether it will impact performance.

Aren't all machines that take 10.8 also able to take 10.9?

Not sure yet. I am almost considering sticking the replacement 840 in kitchen machine, and putting the Kingston V+100 in the MacBook Pro, but the 840 is way faster.

However, I might just end up getting an entirely new Retina machine, depending upon what October brings.

Once you go retina you'll never go back, the display is worth it alone.

I wasn't sure, haven't heard anything about any discontinuing support so far.

mmmtech I'd say go for Mavericks based on the improved OpenGL support.

When I used Windows, every new machine or Windows upgrade got a reformat and reinstall.

On Mac, I generally just do the in-place update. Earlier this year I replaced a number of machines in my immediate and extended family, so they are all relatively "clean", so I will just run the update.

We have two 2009 MacBooks that are mine and my wife's daily drivers. They have gone through a number of OS updates and replacing the HDs with SDDs, but just cloning the old drives. If I have it in me, I may want to reformat and reinstall on those, but don't count on it.

Upgrade. Computer is only around six months old so I'm not seeing the need to do a wipe. Plus it's easier, I guess I'm getting lazy as I get older when it comes to my computers.

I'm planning to upgrade my machines to Mavericks but I will wait until I know for sure there are no issues with any software I need that's work-critical.

I only do clean-installs of any major OS upgrade, never an update. It doesn't really take that much longer, and then I know for certain everything is clean with no baggage from the previous version.

Same here. My main issue is my VPN software. It usually takes a while to get updated. I waited several months to upgrade to Lion, and then several months to upgrade to Mountain Lion, because both of those partially broke my VPN software, which then took months to get updated for compatibility.

Usually, I will update my laptop first, as it is my secondary machine, as a test machine. If I'm satisfied, then I'll update my iMac, which is my primary machine. Actually, I never bothered to update my iMac to Mountain Lion, because I just never got around to it. (On my iMac, I usually do full installs, cuz OS upgrades broke things a few times.)

Concluded that I'm going to wait maybe a week or so for my rPro to see what people are saying before deciding whether do to a clean or upgrade install.

Now I'm strongly considering selling my 2009 13" MBP, soon, perhaps after the education promotion is over Sept. 6 or perhaps after the Sept. 10 event.

Or maybe I should do it just before Sept. 10, just in the off-chance the release the new MBP models then?

Now to figure out how to price it (with a platter drive)...

Wait until after the education discount, definitely, especially if the new MBP models are released as it gives them time to build inventory up so you won't have to wait weeks like I did.

If you have the option to, do a cheap upgrade to 8GB on the Ram as well. I sold my early 2008 15" with SSD for £550 last September if that is of any assistance.

I upgraded from SL to lion and from Lion to ML. Have not done a fresh install since I got my iMac 2 years ago. Will upgrade to mavericks but I'll back everything up just in case

My Mini and my MBP are both new so this will be my first upgrade to them. I am just going to upgrade the OS rather then do a clean install because of how simple and easy I anticipate it to be. If I had owned these for a while I would probably go the clean install route.

Clean install for sure. No crap left over and I want it to be nice and fast. Upgrade installs always feel a little sluggish to me for some reason.

Quite honestly, unless something goes wrong with the upgrade, it is all in your mind.

I just got my retina macbook pro 15 a couple of weeks ago, so I will just install over the top of Mountain Lion. Never had an isssue with upgrading in the past with my other macbooks.

Average person should probably do an in-place upgrade. If you're the type of person that likes to mess with system files however, I'd do a clean install.

Not going to upgrade my 2012 MBP unless Mavricks has some amazing bugfix for SMB2 that isn't available for Mountain Lion. It works pretty well now, I fear if I upgrade I'll accelerate its obsolescence or actually cause full or breakage.

I will attempt all upgrades and almost any manner of tweaks in other OS's but this iThing for me, is supposed to be my "reliable" device.
