Max of 60FPS on any game

I think i must have some setting turned on wrong or something. Maybe vertical sync?

Here is my problem: In any game, counter strike, call of duty, etc. my max Frames per second caps at 60fps. I have an x800 xt pe, so i know it should be like.....999999FPS. my old radeon 7500 ran counter strike at 100 fps.

Any ideas on what option I have turned on (or off)?

This should be an easy thing to fix, I am just not familiar with what option controlls this.

Do you have a LCD monitor? They can display only 60fps.

Check for LCD. Also, check to make sure Vsync isn't forced through the driver.

Ususally, the fps in games is locked to the refresh rate of your monitor. for most LCDs and some crts with video cards that have buggy drivers some games are set to play using a 60hz refresh rate, causing your framerate to never exceed 60fps.

turning vsync off allows the video card to display as many frames as it can draw, regardless of the refresh rate. Sounds good right? Hold on a second! This tends to affect image quality (tearing between textures, weird graphical glitches). Some people never notice, and if you're one of them, more power to you

The solution to this that I recommend is trying to find some setting in your drivers which lets you lock your refresh rate at a certain number. When I had a CRT, I'd use 85hz at 1152x864. 85 fps is good enough for and it avoids and weird graphical glitches that might occur.

Yes, I have an LCD. Where is the vsync option? I am using the ATI Catalyst Control Center.

Would it be in there or somewhere else?

It'll remove the tie-in of the framerate to the refresh rate.

With the new panel, you have to use the "Advanced options", then go to the page where it has all the sliders in one place, and adjust it there (it's in the middle somewhere, look for the slider regarding refresh rate). It doesn't have its own section for some reason like all the other controls do...

I set it to always on and always off, but my FPS is still always set to 60! Also, my LCD has alwasy been on 75.

That's the one; it should be "Always Off" (or you can set it to "Default Off" and toggle it in-game for the games that can control it). I also noticed that the games you were talking about in your original post (CS and COD) are both OpenGL games. Does it also do this with Direct3D games? If so, you might double-check that you haven't changed anything in the OpenGL controls.

see heres the thing. People here done understand how it works. If your moniter refresh rate is 60htz, and vsync is on, your fps will be 60. Turn vsync off and you will get more fps, but you CAN NOT see the extra fps as your moniter is not updating it's screen that fast PERIOD.

Dont listen to what they are saying, turning off vsync so your gameplay will be smoother is 100% bogus, and the only thing it does is add terrible tearing.

So I got my nividia "override refresh rates" set at 120Hz in 10x7, 100Hz in 11x8 and 85 Hz in 16x12 and have always had vsync off. Is this optimal?

recap what u need to do:

lock your monitors refresh rate, at ALL RESOLUTIONS, to 75, if that the highest ur monitr likes..

keep vsync turned on... shud work tbh irl m5

I have an LCD and had the same problem when I got my 9800, didn't have the problem with my old gf2 ti. Basically your LCD should be set to 60hz and Vsync set to "Always On" or "Wait for vertical refresh" or something like that. Enabling this option forces the monitor and the card to display the same # of frames per second and synchronize them. This will cap your display at 60 frames per second but will stop "tearing" and other graphic anomalies caused by uneven amount of frames produced and displayed. When benchmarking always force vsync off though because even though your graphics card is capable of displaying frames much faster, the vsync will limit them and screw up your benchmark.
