I didn't mind that. It was fun to be yanked away from a relaxed position to a scene of having to dodge bullets out of your way.
I LOL'd at the end though, where
the chief of police is on the ground and max is walking around him in circles. I never realized that there was a crosshair on his face and you were supposed to shoot him. He died anyway so never mind. And the funniest thing was that I got an achievement for not shooting the bastard. LOL. Thank God i didn't shoot him though. Wanted him to die the gory death he deserved.

definitely, defintely made me wanna kill that stupid kid from jersey so bad. Make him feel like he should never F#@! with Max Payne! lol

Played first couple chapters and it's definitely a looker. As mentioned, I dislike how much control they take away. I think I've actually been playing about 40% of what's actually been on the screen. And the cutscenes wouldn't be bad, except every few seconds they blur and mess with the colors on the screen. It's really jarring and I can't get into the story at all because of it. I understand doing that as a "drunk effect" right when Max is drinking, but every few seconds during any cut scene is absurd.

I enjoyed it initially. Won't say too much but the level in the guys home seemed a bit like an old arcade game I played people all over. But other than that its all great. Enjoying the new bald max and moving up the hill.

I don't regret buying the game. I thought I would but the game was worth it. Despite the flaws, despite the hackers in online play, I enjoy it and just finished the game for the second time. GJ, Rockstar.

Put some more hours in, and added some more good (and bad) to my list. First the bad... I hate having Max or any NPCs talk about how they have "no time to wait" or "hurry up bro!" when you scatter collectibles around the map. Having to hear "I saw them leave through the garage door" several times over when I'm just making sure I didn't miss any gun parts is damn annoying. If you want to dictate the pace of the game for me, don't hide shit in corners.

That said, the gameplay is still quite fun. It's a hard comparison because I played the originals on the consoles, but it feels quite similar to what I remember in a good way. I found myself pushing on for an hour or so more than I planned because I was having fun.

I also had a solid "holy crap" moment at the beginning of chapter 6 IIRC. It's pretty much visual/graphics based but I'll spoiler it for the sensitive folks:
When you're in the boss' office and the guys start to invade. You walk out into an office area with your SMG and a whole bunch of guys coming at you. I dove to the side picking off a few, and I was in awe of all the stuff breaking and flying through the air. Glass shattered around me as I dove through it, windows were demolished by gun fire, papers from the desks flew in the air as sparks lept from the monitors getting hit. It was badass.

Damn, I came onto this post to see if anyone else had the same problem.
This blur and colors every few seconds just killed it for me. I couldn't play more than 20mins of it and had to look away from the monitor. At the 20min mark, I got to the point where I wanted to smash the game disc.
WTF were they thinking?

Those are exactly my thoughts. Gun parts and clues are well hidden and needs exploring which feels weird thanks to Max mumbling to himself all the time. Heck there was one scene when i was searching around for a gun part and the game ended cos i did not leave the exit on time. It is a different thing that it was supposed to be a "go hurry" sorta mission. But why then would they include guns/clues there?

Not me. I loved the psychedelic style of the cutscenes. The EPIC moment for me was when he transitioned into the Hawaiian shirt, the bald head and the shades with that beard. The visuals in that particular chapter were out of this world. And thank God he stopped drinking. Still didn't give up on th painkillers though.

What makes me wonder is how hasn't he had an OD or some sorta of stomach trouble after drinking and taking pills simultaneously all the time?

I think you got D/U reversed

Haha thanks... you're right.

Well, even if you fail the main objective, you still seem to get to keep any golden gun parts that you find prior to failing/dying.

Not me. I loved the psychedelic style of the cutscenes.

Eh, I didn't care for them much. The effect is fine to some extent, but they overdid it. Although, I thought that tossing words on the screen was more annoying. The only time I liked it was when the game didn't play the spoken audio for some reason, and there isn't a cinematic subtitle option, so those words were my only cue.

Game fucking sucks, wtf happened to Max? TV glitches in cutscenes, stupid stylization of words in said cutscenes "blah blah blibby COP blaah blah BODYGUARD".

MP1 was awesome. MP2 was perfect. MP3 was a total departure from the series and reeks of ADHD tardness. Such a shame.

EDIT:

I thought my bitching required some explanation as to why I loathe this game so much.

In Max Payne 1 I felt compelled to play the game out of revenge for your (his) family being murdered. It wrapped the story up and ended nicely.

in Max Payne 2 I felt compelled to follow through because of Mona and her ties to you from the first game. The story was magnificent and the characters from the first game tied all the loose ends up in the story. If you played on the hardest Mona lived. End of series

In Max Payne 3 nothing is familiar, no past characters in the hour or 2 that I played it (Just a flashback to the annoying hispanic dude you roll with in order to show you in your old outfit). I didn't care about the bosses' wife and thought it was laughable that the hispanic guy just knew where to go....pure ADHD.

Who stole the money? I don't know. Oh flashback to when I met you, oh wake up we're on a boat going to the bad guy's hideout. Blegh.

You get to see Vinnie Gognitti's tombstone in onr of the levels. BTW it would be silly to tie up past characters since he's clearly in a different country and in a different phase of his life.

Eh, what? Its clearly mentioned who steals the money and why they are going to that particular hideout. Perhaps you dozed off during the cutscenes??

I didn't care about the bosses' wife

You are NOT Max Payne. He cared about the girl and he wanted to save them because of what has happened to him in the past 2 games. How come you finished MP 1 & 2 (on hard mod) and still not able to comprehend all this?

A tombstone? ...seriously? Like that should be made note of. The departure from familiar settings/plot

It's definitely a possibility, it's hard to pay attention when the screen flashes and random words pop up on the screen. I'm more focused on why the hell they picked the particular words. Seems like no reason.

No shit?

Part of what makes a good game is immersion. This game fails to do that for me. This with the terrible (Its so bad it's cliche, but I refuse to use that word) story make it nearly impossible to comprehend for me.

Fuck, I had more fun LISTENING to "Lords and Ladies" on the 2nd Max than I did PLAYING this game. I've seen better scripts on toilet paper after I wiped my ass with it.

EDIT:

Just want to make it clear that I'm not knocking on you for liking the game. It's just that I find it impossible to like due to how much I played the last two (since this is so different). I still use/have my Max Payne 1 mousepad.

I also felt the story lets it down a bit. The cut scenes felt more like a GTA game than a Max Payne game. And the way they flash text on screen for the important words in the script was quite annoying.

The gameplay, graphics, music and overall presentation are top notch though.

i guess for some it sucks. I'm really glad they didn't bring back the stupid nightmare levels. THOSE were annoying. But I felt so compelled by this story that I kept trucking on. Beat the whole damn thing in 2 days... first day starting @ 10 PM

At times it reminded me of 'Man on Fire' with Denzel washington with the cut scenes and the word flashes. Sort of Man on fire, meets the matrix.

I haven't played the first 2 games but I borrowed this from a friend and really enjoyed it. I've never played a Rockstar game that I didn't like.

I'm with the other posters who mentioned that the emphasized words on the screen didn't really make any sense, and seemed to be chosen at random. It was kind of distracting, because I would see the world highlighted, and wonder why instead of just watching the cut scene.

The game isn't perfect by any means, but there are so many positives that really outway the little gripes that one might have with certain things. I really feel like they did a good job with this one, making it fresh, but still at the core it's good ol max payne. You have to give them credit, it's hard to make a 3rd sequel, because you need to please the fans of the first two, create a game that's not a clone, but still retain the elements that made the fans-fans. and they really did that imo.

I've played for a few hours. My thoughts

+ Gunplay feels very max payne. Nicely done
+ Graphics are very good, but not quite Witcher 2 quality.
+ It's Max Payne...he is still the same dude

- Too many cut scenes. I don't want to partake in an interactive movie
- He's an alcoholic. We get it.
- A bit jarring. We seem to be jumping all over the place

I played till Chapter 9 but thats as far I can take. Truth is for the shitload of guys that get killed in each chapter, the story progrsession is very little. I am trying to decide if I should watch the walkthrough videos to see what happens in the end or should I turn on God mode and just breeze through the shooting part.
