Almost no critics have seen it yet and for a movie due out this Friday that is not a good sign. Unfortunately, this probably means no Max Payne 3 if the movie tanks.

I really doubt the success of this movie will matter in regards to releasing a second sequel to the series.

KT

I can see why you're confused...

SoulAssassin was talking about a 3rd installment of the video game series, not talking about a 3rd movie. I was saying the success of the movie won't have anything to do with a 3rd video game being released. I'll edit...

Ahh, ok, I guess that makes sense now.

I think the critics will always give a movie a bad review as long as they haven't been given the opportunity to screen it before hand. Almost like a big FU to the producer of the film for not letting them have a look before everyone else, like they are somehow deserving of such a privilege.

Wow, I had always assumed it would be R...

That sucks:frown: Still might have to see it.

I was hoping for some Sin City-style violence, but with the PG-13 rating it probably won't come to be. One has to admit that the name for the movie just screams "13 year old killfest", so I'm not really surprised.

I can't really trust most reviewers about game based movies, as the vast majority haven't played the game so doesn't have anything of expectations or memories to tie to it. That said many of them are pretty poor, but I still have a bit of hope for this one. Even if it doesn't stay on the video game track it still looks like it'll be good enough.

Seriously, how have these people who claimed to have watched MP already done it? AFAIK there weren't any screening and it's not showing in theaters yet...

The extended trailer shows Max Payne asking about a valkyrie tattoo at a really goth-looking tat parlor.

It really bothers me that they're making a movie. The original game basically started as a tech demo of a game based around the matrix's lobby scene.

So, really, we're talking:
1. Make a movie
2. Make a game that rips off parts of the movie.
3. Wait 5 years.
4. Make a movie based on the game.
5. Profit!!!

Maybe I am only going by the regular trailer and I thought they were demons and angels. Besides I didn't think Valkyries had wings. Max Payne(the game) was one of my favorites played it through more than once it was cheesy but in a good way. I think if they would have done that with this movie (think "Shoot'em Up") it could have turned out pretty good now I'm not so sure.

Supposedly they only trimmed 6 seconds of footage from what they originally had in order to get the PG-13 rating, so its not like they changed a lot.

But if what remains is still awful, then it doesn't make any difference whether its R or PG-13.

Actually :

1 - Futuremark, back in ~1998 or so, had a 3d demo with a 'Max Payne' banner on the top of a building in a futuristic city flyby.

2 - The Matrix comes out in 1999, popularizing the new-age leather and guns + slowmo gunfight idea.

3 - 3dMark 2001 comes out, sometime in 2000 I think, with a lobby scene featuring the Max Payne character walking through a lobby in slow mo directly aping the Matrix lobby scene.

4 - Max Payne video game comes out in 2003 or so, sort of coinciding with terrible Matrix movie releases, and it actually diverts somewhat from the Matrix look, instead going for more of a sepia-toned surreal modern noir feel. With Matrix-inspired 'bullet-time' and the leather clothes.

5 - Release a movie, inspired by the video game, which was inspired by the Matrix, which modified an existing idea and name that launched before the Matrix.

Confusing indeed.

what does the sucky ass (I am assuming) movie have to do with the game?

The games were both incredible and sold really well. A newer version is one of the only things I would actually spend $40+ on.

Max Payne came out in 2001, Max Payne 2 came out in 2003.

All you need to know: the games rock, the movie will probably suck.

They have been dragging there dick on making a 3rd one for years. If the movie does well, then interest in another video game will rise and thus profits will rise. If the movie does shitty then the value of the product is weakened and less people will buy it. Hardcore gamers who appreciated the first two (myself included) would probably still buy it but the overall market will be less if the movie tanks. Less room for profit means less possibility it will get made. I believe the possibility of 3 is dependent upon the movies success which is less likely the more I hear.

And the games, unfortunately, did not sell "really well". According to some (http://www.alanwake.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1219) the first sold about 5 million and the 2nd about 1 million. I remember 2 pretty much going right to the bargain bin on the console side.

All that being said, I would love it if they made another. Just finished playing 1 and getting ready to play 2. While the graphics are obviously dated the gameplay and story are just as entertaining as I remember.

Saw it. I thought it was pretty decent. If your a fan of the game, i recommend it. 8/10. Hard to say how good it would have been if I didnt know the game. The consesus seems to be that its one of the better/best videogame based movies but httas not saying much. Definately left itself open for a sequel.

In short:

-Mila Kunis, hot. Believable? Yes, apart from being russian.
-Really cool effects. Thumbs up.
-Felt pretty dark.
-About the rating. Not a problem. Enough violence to get the message through.
-Plot: So-so. For anyone familiar with the actual game its good, for others it might be too confusing or over the top.
-At times I thought: "Damn, this is pretty good." and few moments later "too korny" or "too obvious".
-Go see it.

Well that's promising to hear.

I am leaning towards seeing it.

I don't see why they would want to make an action movie PG-13, though. I want to see R-rated movies if I'm seeing something that's supposed to be violent.

Yea, trying not to let the fact that i want to like movie cloud my judgement. Go in not expecting too much from the plot and youll be fine. Its cool seeing how they interpret some of the scenes from the game. The reviews at rottentomatoes seem really unfair. Like they have a pact that if its a action movie, its gotta be bad. If its based on a video game, its gotta be horrible.

I dont get the fuzz about the PG-13 rating. In Finland it was K15 (PG-15 i guess). Never felt it need more gore, violence or foul language.
