If you really want noise reducing headphones, target sells a pair of Koss ones that will do the job. They are basically ear-plugs, with speakers in them. You roll the earplug/headphone between your thumb and forefinger, then pop it in your ear. These headphones also give a lot more sound for your power. For instance, if you have a nomad jukebox and it's too quiet with regular headphones, the Koss noise canceling ones do a good job of amplifing the sound for ya.

cjchaps,
there is a big difference between the Koss product you are referring to, and digital noice canceling headphones such as this Maxell one, and the famous Bose one. The digital headphones will actually just "phase out" ambient noise (must be more or less constant), such as an engine sound (airplaine, motorcycle, vaccum cleaner). You actually can use these without listening to any music, just to get rid of the engine noise, while you can still TALK and LISTEN to people sitting around you (the idea is a bit similar to the headphones used on helicopters I guess). The Koss earplugs will prevent you from hearing anything around you. Not exactly the same type of products, but I can see similar usages in some cases (however you wouldn't want to use earplugs while riding a motorcycle; they do make noise canceling helmets though).

I am just not sure how good the Maxell headphones are compared to the ones from Aiwa ($50 at amazon.com), but definitely worth a shot.

I was looking at these yesterday and I decided not to get them. The reviews on Amazon (?) didn't seem too good.

I've used a pair of the Bose $299 model several times before and it always produced a somewhat faint but definately noticeable white noise (hiss) in the background. I personally found it annyoing. Does anyone know if these do the same thing?

I used to travel from the West Coast to Europe about once a quarter, and would fly American's business class. They provide the Bose headphones, and they make all of the difference in the world - with or without audio. Yes, there is a very slight background noise, but it truly does cancel virtually all of the airplane noise.

As I now do my of my travel domestically, they are no longer available to me, and I cannot justify the price of the Bose. At $19, this is very tempting. Anyone know of a B & M that carries them where we can PM and return if they don't perform?

i have the Kenwood noise cancelling headphones, they are about 100 bucks. they too produce a white noise when the switch is turned on into noise cancellation mode. i can only hear this hiss in a quiet background. but it doesnt bother me that much since its not a bad tradeoff when its working on a plane cancelling the jet engine noises, i dont have to turn the discman's volume as high as i would of if i didint have the noise cancelling feature to hear the music. if you can hear the white noise, then the background is probably too quiet for it to cancell any noise out anyways, just turn off noise cancelling and you can still hear your music through the headphones without the hiss.

I've got a pair of these now, and a pair of Aiwa HP-CN5's. These are totally better than the Aiwa's. The Aiwa's had to be precisely positioned to get good noise cancellation. I had to turn the sound down, then position for maximum ambient cancellation, then turn the audio back up. They were also very uncomfortable. These Maxell's are comfortable, and have pretty good attenuation of low frequency HVAC noises in my office. The audio sounds good to me but I'm no audiophile. I think they would work great on an airplane. They do not have much attenuation for voice and keyboard clatter noises outside my office. I think they're a great value for the money and I'm thinking about getting more for my kids in the car.

I bought a a pair a few weeks back. The headphones cut out some noise and make listening to narriated (sp?) books (audible.com) a bit more plesent (sp?). Seems to me the 'phones cancel out about 40% of noise. An OK deal @ `26 c shipping.

Anyone tried this while riding a lawn tractor? I want to filter out the noise from tractor yet be able to hear other sounds, music also. How will this work in this situation?

How much of the sound gets cancel by the foam and headsets?...and how much by the electronics?

I'm thinking in using the electroinics and plugging it into a couple of soundbugs: Link And then sticking the soundbugs in the two windows in my bedroom...I live nearby a highway and it is pretty anoing (the trucks specially!)

But I'm wondering if it is really worth it two spent $100 between everything. It would be an interesting experiment thought.

Thanks in advance!

These Noisebusters rock! They are very good at cutting out airplane noise, and make no noise themselves. It's pretty cool. Imagine sitting with them turned off but on your head. The plane is pretty loud. Then you turn the switch, and suddenly you can barely hear the plane! For $20 bucks, I'd buy two, one for you and one for your signif. other. I paid $80 for mine a long time ago, and they are necessary for any plane ride where I want some peace. The only criticism I have of them is that not all devices play music through them at an adequate volume. For instance, my Nike MP3 player won't play loud enough through them, so what I do is use small earbuds under the Noisebuster headset. If your device plays loud, no problem. They work well for monotonous and continuous noise, while still allowing you to hear speech, etc. I don't know if you could rig them to cancel out trucks though, unless the truck noise is pretty constant. But the soundbug idea is pretty clever, and if it works, for a $100 you've got a pretty hot technology for people who live too close to highways!

Ok, I ordered these Sunday (ships 24-48 hours). It's Thursday and it still hasn't shipped. I've emailed them three times and received only generic email replies, and I need them by Saturday. This is ridiculous. Anyone have a phone number for Buy.com? I can't find one on the website.

Or you could buy the Noisebuster Extreme from NCT. They are 39 bucks but include a internal jack for MP3/CD Players.

Just do a search in google. Might be able to get it cheaper but for the extra input jack I think it's worth it. Better then trying to wear 2 sets of head phones.

I have a pair of Noise Canceling AIWA headphones that I got open box from Best Buy for about $20. I've had them for about two years and they are one of the best things I've gotten. I use them every plane trip and they are fantastic for making plane noise vanish. I use these with my Archos Jukebox which doesn't isn't really that loud. Canceling out the noise makes it loud enough to hear in planes and while I mow the lawn.
With normal headphones you'd hardly hear the music.

Salsal, I use mine every weekend while I mow the lawn (small Craftsman rider) and it does a great job of canceling out the mower engine. At the end when I take them off I squint at how loud the mower is when I take them off. When I turn off the noice canceling feature I can barely hear the music. The white noise is just a byproduct of how this technology works. You can notice it when it's quiet, but if you're listening to music in plane you'll never notice the white noise.

BTW, the airplane adapter plug is great... now you don't have to listen in mono when you use your own headphones. Whoever the idiot was that came up with that airplane jack (or those stethoscope headphones) should be dropped from a plane.

I ordered these on 5-5-02 and still have an "On Order" status. They have emailed me twice offering to cancel my order. Has anyone actually received their headphones yet?
