Zap0602,

I'm with you on that one, I'm big on the CTU 30 - Blue. Best price I've found was $24.99 a dozen at a local golf store here in Raleigh, NC. For golf ball prices in general, golfsmith had been fair for me...

Just my 2 cents...

I love the general myth of golf balls.

Due to USGA rules, balls can only fly a certain distance. There for no ball is truely longer than others.

The key is finding a ball that matches your swing, and gives you the best ball flight.

More than anything, with amatures, a favorite ball brand is the equivlant of a "lucky shirt".

I was a "pond wader" when I was younger, and would find all my balls, and sell them as well. I honestly can't think of the last time I bought I dozen balls. And I can probably count the times I have in my 24 years of golf, on one hand.

That all being said, Maxfli makes some good balls. I have heard the Noodle is a great ball for someone looking for a little higher ball flight.

hell the first time i played golf was with range balls! lost about 10 that day.

not too good for putting though...

now i play with top flite's, not too expensive but a decent ball IMO. Or if I can find a titleist pro v1 that someone lost I'll take that too!

shipping sort of kills the deal though
u can find these balls at equivalent prices at costco/sams and other locations although the selection of types of balls will be less

ProV1 and ProV1* are $39.99 everywhere. There's almost no mark-up on golfballs at most places. They're a low profit item to get people in the door so that you can sell them a $400 driver that's got a $250 mark-up. The only real deals you find on balls are occasional rebates from the manufacturer. But on those every retailer will have the same rebates and it's almost always on an unpopular or discontinued models. Take a sample of the top 10 online golf e-tailers and the spread on all the major top quality balls will be no more than $5 from highest to lowest.

Same here. I bought a couple dozen Maxfli Revolutions on sale last year and they really sucked. Even though they were urethane, I couldn't put any spin on them at all. Plus, they felt like I was hitting rocks.

I've become an ebayer when it comes to buying balls now. I recently bought 50 AAA/- CTU-30 Reds for $62. They were in excellent shape. I honestly couldn't tell they were hit. They were in pristine condition. That's my route now for buying golf balls.

Great price on the Maxfli Elite golf balls.

If they're good enough for Jack Nicklaus, they're good enough for most around here... at $15.95 a dozen you can't go wrong.

I'll give these a try. I'm a big fan of the Precept Laddies, and it sounds like these are Maxfli's equivalent. BTW - try the Laddies if you haven't already. Best ball I have ever played.

Ditto. I just started hitting the Topflite XL3000 super feel. I played with a few topflites years ago. They were like rocks. I played maxfli's some, but mainly dunlop's DDH. I loved the feel of titleist, but couldn't afford them the way I play. The Dunlop DDH was a great substitute because of the softer core and cover. Dunlop has since gone with a harder core that doesn't suit me. I tried the Topflite after them being told they had softened up a bit. I can't believe the difference between the newer "super feel" topflites and the "toprocks" I once tried.

Distance is wonderful, but give me a better feeling ball. I love hitting more greens from 150 yards with a softer ball than missing the green with a rock from 130 yards. If I do miss a green (not a rare occurance), I have more confidence with a softer ball to go up and down.

walberty,

No disrespect but all balls are not created equal. The Pro V1 for instance has been proven in Golf Digest Studies ( August 2001 issue p.153 ) to fly six yards further when hit with it's seems are vertical. The whole debate prompted Maxfli and Precept to air complaints that the Pro V1 might exceed USGA rules. Yes, I know, I'm just an amateur and this guys are pros and making the the big bucks.

This brings me to agree with you on the favorite ball brand - lucky shirt analogy. I've only been golfing for 2 full years now and hover in the 12-13 handicap zone, but I do believe in the psychological side of the game. If you believe that a certain ball gives you an edge (and can afford $40.00/dozen) than go for it...

Thanks for the insight and good points walberty.

I picked up 60 AAAA Strata Tour Professional Balatas off Ebay for about $30 or so. You have to be a straight hitter off the tee with these (any slice or hook will be exaggerated), but they spin like crazy with short irons. I can back a ball up several feet with anything below an eight iron. Nice feel for chipping/putting as well.

Not all balls are created equal, but all balls are created equal enough. The USGA/R&A set limits on how fast a ball can leave a clubface and all balls are within a couple of percentage points of that limit. Ever wonder how truth in advertising laws allow EVERY ball to be listed as being longer than it's competition? The manufacturers can't lie and have to submit documentation to back up the claim, so they do. Tests are manipulated to create conditions where any given ball will win. Some tests are conducted with a driver and a 120 mph swing speed into the wind. Others are with a 5 iron and an 85 mph swing speed downwind and others might be conducted with the above conditions, but with changes in temperature and humidity. The distance potential of all the top balls is so close to one another that tiny variables like wind direction, swing speed, spin rate, launch angle, firmness of ground or temperature will determine which is longer on any given test. A test which shows ProV1 as longest and Nike Tour Accuracy DD model as shortest will be completely changed just by reversing wind direction as the ProV1 flies very high and benefits from being hit downwind and the Nike DD flies very low and is best hit into the wind. It's all bulls**t, the ads are designed to fool morons.

About the only differences between major top quality balls is trajectory, spin rate and feel. Some feel harder, some softer, some spin higher on full shots, some spin less when hit hard and more on half shots. Some feel firm and slick, others feel like old balata. But the performance is very close to the same. I play the Strata Tour Ultimate 2 because it's easier to control the trajectory than some other models. The ProV1 flies too high and spins too much while I love the trajectory of the Nike TA DD, but hate the feel. I used to like the Precept Tour Premium, but when they changed it to the Tour Premium LS the cover was changed and the trajectory and spin rate lowered enough so that it just wasn't the same. Even then on 95% of the shots I would not have been able to tell the difference. You are completely right about the lucky shirt/favorite brand analogy. If you think something is going to help it might help, but it's a placebo effect. Mostly it's just marketing.

GagHalfrunt,

Thank you for taking the time to enlighten me in a very grey area. Your reply was very educational. I've definitely been given a crash course on golf balls in this thread.

I just switched from Callaways CTU 30 Blue to TopFlites new 3000xl 'super straight' line myself. LOVE the feel and actually gained about 5-15 yards on my drive. Not only has my game improved but I can spend the money I'm saving on balls and get at least one more beer at the turn!
