Maximum heart rate blowout!

You can estimate your maximum heart rate based on your age. To estimate your maximum age-related heart rate, subtract your age from 220. For example, for a 50-year-old person, the estimated maximum age-related heart rate would be calculated as 220 – 50 years = 170 beats per minute (bpm).

Well, do they mean sustained HR? I suppose not. Anyway, I go over my maximum sometimes and maybe by plenty

I bought HR monitors just before the pandemic and have used them ever since. I quad skated the streets during the pandemic, daily. I maxed out at maybe 160 bpm, but usually was quite a ways below that for maximum. Before today, I'd never seen over maybe 162. I rarely averaged above 140 bpm for my skates, which were typically 10 miles, taking 70-80 minutes.

Lately I have been hitting the gym 3x/week after a bike ride of 5 miles, which takes me around 1/2 hour. Of course, same going home. The last few weeks I have taken up hiking a trail in the hills near me (on days I don't hit the gym), I ride to the base, lock my bike and make the ~ 700 foot climb. I took my HR monitor a few days and hit 150-160 maximum.

So, today it was rainy in the morning and not wanting to get my shoe soles muddy, and not being a gym day, I decided to ride into the hills. I used to do that daily 20 years ago, taking time splits at several "milestones." It's a climb of a little over 700 feet, a gradual climb but there are steep sections. Some younger guys were passing me, there were 20 years ago too, but I'm not in the shape I was then. I developed carpal tunnel syndrome and couldn't ride long distances without my left hand numbing up, so I stopped riding into the hills, probably a good 15 years ago! My CTS came to a head about 4 months ago, saw a hand doctor, had nerve conduction study ("severe CTS, both hands"), had surgery on both hands, 3 months and 1 1/2 months ago. So, the numbness of left hand is gone now, decided to ride my old ride today, 1st time with HR monitor on. It was a challenge not to have to get off the bike but I stuck with it. The HR monitor app results are staggering: maximum HR 212! I have to wonder if something went wrong. Length of ride was 1:45 (I did stop to drink water and pee for a few minutes). Average HR was 147. I had to change the HR monitor battery before the ride, so it is a fresh battery. I could do it again with a different HR monitor, different Android phone too, but it WAS a tough workout!

Did my HR actually hit 212? I was "no way!" Or was it...? Um, I am NOT 8 YO.

Edit:
Is it OK to hit your max heart rate?

Your maximum heart rate depends on your age. Subtracting your age from the number 220 will give you your maximum heart rate. Suppose your age is 35 years, and your maximum heart rate is 185 beats per minute. If your heart rate exceeds 185 beats per minute during exercise, it is dangerous for you.

According to the above, I should be dead. Well, maybe my HR monitor or app fucked up.

Edit 2:
Is 220 minus your age accurate?

The traditional formula for determining HRmax is "220 minus age", but can underestimate HRmax by up to 40 beats per minute in seniors. In fact, the method is inaccurate already at an age of 30–40 years, and gets more inaccurate the older you are.

Uh, I should still be dead.

If we could and were to monitor every single parameter in our body, we would find out that we come close to dying multiple times a day. Every day one wakes up is a blessing. Start your day with gratitude and end it with gratitude too, feeling blessed that you spent one more wonderful day in a beautiful world with beautiful people.

The cardiologist used drug induced fatigue and a treadmill to get my heart rate up to 140. Thought I was going to die.
I sometimes wonder if I'm going to die doing intense aerobic exercise. It doesn't stop me. I figure what I'm doing is actually preventing my having a heart attack, etc. I also figure if that's how I die, no problem. Not such a bad way to go.

I can do drug induced fatigue on my own thank you very much!

In fact I don't even need the drugs nowadays!
Fatigue comes and goes. Usually it's mostly because I need sleep, nutrition is sometimes a factor, of course. At times boredom also factors in.

As a bit of a coincidence, my HR is at 125 right now but I've been carrying an IKEA flat pack upstairs!
I'm sure they didn't used to be this heavy!

We've had Ikea stores here for something like 15-20 years. A woman I know encouraged me several times to check out their local giant store, enthusiastically. She subsequently studied and developed a 2nd career as a real estate agent. I've heard a ton about Ikea. Still haven't set foot in one of their stores.

Ain't that the truth.
My issue was a slow heart, resting rate around 45 bpm, mid 30's when I was asleep. Three different MD's told me I was going to need a pacemaker. After a bunch of tests they decided 40bpm was my normal, and sent me on my way.

I'm wondering if capable doctors and exercise trainers might not be a good idea.

If you need cheep furniture, it's the place to go.

I always figured I'd go kicking and screaming, the result of some horrible construction accident.

I've never been in one either, I just order it online and a couple of guys bring it in a big truck!
Stuffs ok for flat pack.

40 is pretty low! Either you are very fit or you have a touch of heart block! Nothing to worry about though, just keep an eye on it.

Yeah, it's for my daughter's room. I looked at some nice oak ones, then looked at the cost and how I was going to get them up the stairs and decided that IKEA was good enough! 😆

The final result was that my heart was healthy and didn't need to beat any faster. The cardiologist shook my hand, said "you're all done with me, the exit is down the hall on the right".

On my wife's last birthday I foolishly got her a mechanics tool chest for her sewing room. I never even thought about dragging that goddamn thing up the stairs till I got it home and she said, "how are you going to get it upstairs?"

If we ever move I'm leaving it.

I like the relaxed atmosphere there, probably due to their presentation and decoration. The furniture is nice but most of it you have to think twice about getting due to the sticker shock. I've always thought of going to Ikea like going to a museum or art gallery.

That has its advantages in certain cases. Like not attracting the attention of animals that listen for heartbeats and I think you can be a good sniper too as the slow heart helps focus and steadiness.

Maybe cheap for you. Everything there is at least double price.
What's cheaper than Ikea?
We picked up 4 cabinets for the wife's sewing room from Ikea, it was cheaper than the wood I would use to make the stuff. I assembled 3 of them into an island work bench. It worked out well.

Maybe it's a regional difference. In UAE, just go to the worker's city (where all the blue collar worker accommodations are) and you can find dirt cheap furniture shops. Sure, it's not as fancy as Ikea but it's good enough for most cost conscious people.

I recall someone in here saying that the typical wrist-wearable heart rate monitors are less accurate at higher BPM. There's also some evidence that increasing your fitness can increase your max HR (and OP seems remarkably fit for his age), which has also been my anecdotal experience. When I first got my tracker, my max rate seemed to be about 172--it seemed to correlate with my activity level, when I'd hit 172 my body pretty much forced me to stop and wait for it to drop back down a little bit. I kept training with an eye towards improving my cardio fitness, it's harder to know what my max rate is now, I hit 190 during a sprint a while back, and I can continue hiking uphill when I'm at 172 now. I had asked my doctor about it, and her general advice was as long as I feel fine, don't worry about it.
