Just got a news update from the maxthon browser that I still sometimes use. Maxthon's a great browser shell for IE that many here use and they just announced they're a new "partner" of microsoft.

Why would they be "partnering" with an IE shell like Maxthon...an admission that IE sucks and needs more browsing features and capability than microsoft can deliver this century?

Maxthon News - Let's meet in Las Vegas
Upon the official invitation by Microsoft, the Maxthon Team will join the International CES 2006 show on Jan 5 to Jan 8, 2006, Las Vegas, USA.

As the sole browser partner of Microsoft, we will share our understanding on how to improve user's internet browsing experience there, and present a whole new full-featured Maxthon Browser.

If you happen to be there, please pay a visit to our booth. We will be exhibiting in Microsoft's Booth Number CO-13A (just by the entrance). Your advices and feedbacks are priceless to us.

We want to say "Thank You" to all our users. Without your constant support and feedback we can't be there.

As always, Let's make it better!

Kudos to the maxthon developers tho, they're good people.

I don't think so, but all I've got to go by is this news popup. Nothing mentioned on the forum yet either.

Does anyone notice that Microsoft always grabs the little guy to get into the game? They don't work too hard on making their own software anymore, they just find the low-man and throw money at him to produce something that will compete with the rest of the people. Not that their purchase of Giant had a bad outcome of course, it's not a bad anti-spyware tool. Just thought it interesting to note.

I don't like the IE shells myself, but at least Avant Browser hasn't sold out yet.

Dont they have a majority of the browser market share?

Yeah but their browser is crappy compared to others and they know it.

Microsoft has always done that. Even DOS, which made them exist, was made by someone else.

Maxthon rocks. I hope MS do a good job of integrating similar features into IE7.

I always like hearing news that Microsoft is putting more effort into IE. more resources = better browser = more competition = better browser = easier to support it at work.

Yeah, but to acquire that majority, they got their browser technology through someone else.

In 1995, Spyglass licensed the source code for Mosaic to Microsoft and Internet Explorer was born.

A lot of big companies buy and license technology from smaller companies. They can either spend lots of money on R&D for new software or they can just get it from a smaller company that already has a working product.

Yea, pretty much all of the good stuff to come out of MS was bought from someone else. SQL, NTFS, IE3, etc. Hell MS hired one of the creators of VMS to design the core of NT. AD is just a modified implementation of Kerberos, LDAP and DNS and when you run dcpromo and when I first set it up and it created the SYSVOL share I just had to chuckle at how blatantly they seemed to rip off NetWare.

And that's probably why Open Source software scares them so much, even if they are able to convince the developer of a good OSS project to turn it over to MS and relicense it to them so they can close the source. The past released will still be OSS and will most likely be picked up and maintained by someone new.

Microsoft existed before DOS. And Tim Paterson (the guy who made that DOS)
was later made a VP of programming at MS.
