It does say "fluid dymanic bearings" on the box, but every DiamondMax Plus 9 drive has that in it's specs. They are all Boxed Retail product, which can be purchased at Compusa, Office Depot or even Fry's, and comes with a 3 year warrenty. As opposed to "Bare drive" deals, which are 1 year warrenty.

So..whats all the talk about getting one which has a woman on the box...for the 3 year warranty. ?? is that just for other drives that u can get?

TIA

Hey, there IS a woman on the box. She seems to be enjoying her computer just a little too much for my comfort tho....

But I've had quite a few IBM drives in the past 4 years or so, and not had a single problem with any of them.

Yes, you should be able to use 2 120 gig drives in a RAID array even if they are not the same brand.

I had a similar DiamondMax Plus 9 120gig (the L0 model) that started playing music one day, sounded like a cell phone ring. I called up MTS, they said these newer drives do that if the drive does not spin up. As I put the phone down and he heard the music, the phone tapped the drive, and it spun up and booted. I ghosted my data to another drive right away, and rma'ed the drive even tho it was now working again. They shipped me the new drive, tho I had to give them a credit card in case I did not send the RMA'ed one back. Had the replacement 2 days later, as has always been my experience with Maxtor. But then again, I've always bought Maxtor myself for the past 5 years or so (and that's quite a lot of drives), and I've only seen 2 that I had to RMA. My admittedly out of date experience with Western Digital drives makes me think that's pretty good.

Thanks lurker and sketch!

was this in store?

No, i called the 800 number of staples. Because i called around 9:00 my local bestbuy was still closed. They weren't able to call them and check to see if the hdd was in stock. So i suggested the CSR to check the webpage, he did, and said that he'll price match for me. He gave me an order number, and said that my hdd is arriving tomorrow (Friday). I just checked online, the price was matched correctly, and my coupon was applied too. It also shows correct order time and delivery estimate date so i guess it was successful.

BTW i think it should also work in store. The only reason that i didn't go B&M was because i already messed with my local staples manager about the CD-R deal. (100pk Maxell for $5.39 out the door no rebates) . Anyway i got into both deals and they were successful.

Hi, this turns out to be a YMMV deal after all. My luck with these things tend to suck for the most part, so I'm not too surprised. Maybe my technique's all wrong. Any pointers, guys? Thanks.

sonarcade: ok, well, thanks

Tammy: Thank you for waiting. We can not price match. Our price is the same. After rebates it is $109.99.
sonarcade: ok
Tammy: Thank you. One minute please.

Tammy: Would you mind hanging on a moment while I research this issue?

Well you should keep trying because i also called late last night around 11:30, a representative who sounds very tiring said that he would definitely NOT pricematch the hdd. He didn't even want to listen to the model number of the hdd or which bestbuy i'm trying to tell him. So i had to hang up and call again in the morning. Try to meet a nice CSR, and BE NICE TO THEM. That's my #1 thing to keep in mind when i call CSR's. If you're nice to them, they'll be nice to you and help you as much as they can.

Since so many people are getting this deal (including myself), i think you should have no trouble getting it. So keep trying,,, good luck!

awesome. Just got mine for $85 + tax to a grand total of $92.65. Thanks guys for your help. Since this is my first real success, I guess I can identify what I did incorrectly the first time around:

-I didn't clarify that the rebate only applied to Best Buy(!!!)
-I didn't realize that free shipping was only offered when pricematching with B&M stores, NOT internet dealers(this was actually settled by the CSR telling me that a local Circuit City had it in stock allowing me to get free shipping)
-I kissed a little ass, not to the point of flattery but obnoxiously courteous for my standards(sure a little bit of you dies along the way, but hey)

Although I thought the process was going to be automatic, the long wait compounded with previous failures proved it otherwise. But hey, you might get lucky and get a case like that guy whose CSR just asked immediately if he wanted to PM to BB.

I've been buying Maxtor hard drives since about 6 years ago. They've always been great to me. Fast, quiet, and very reliable. That is until about 4 months ago. I bought an 80GB, 2MB (Diamond MAX Plus 740DX). This drive is horrible. Slow, noisy...It has a 40GB platter and Fluid Bearing Motor but it sucked. It's even worse than my old 30GB Maxtor from 2 years ago. My 30GB Maxtor drive benches faster even though it has a 30GB platter and the same amount of cache (not to mention it was made 2 years earlier). I was so pissed with the 80GB drive that I had to buy this drive, 120GB, 8MB (and another Maxtor, I know). I've been considering the WD Special Edition 120GB drive since a while but it's never got a good deal so I went with this deal. Plus I've heard a lot of good things about this drive (some says it outperforms the WD!!). Let's give Maxtor another try.

Got my drive today. Ordered 2 days ago. Good deal.

Below is my order info:
------------------------------------------------------------
MAXTOR 120GB 7200RPM 499950 $105.99 each 1 $105.99 Shipped

Subtotal: $105.99
Coupon Codes: - $20.00
Tax: $7.09
Shipping: $0.00
Total: $93.08

The Maxtor 100GB +20Gb hard drive has a different UPC code and MFG model number "L01J100", all you will get is a rejection postcard saying you send a invalid UPC code.

Probably. But since we keep hearing CSR's say "with our $30 rebate" refering to this one, so don't you think it's worth the gamble of a stamp?

passivex, I had a 80GB, 2MB (Diamond MAX Plus 740DX that I had problems with too. Once I ran the Maxtor Powermax software and recertified the drive, the problems went away. Give it a shot if you still have the drive.

Ordered one tonight online but the CSR on duty tonight says that it is there policy to not Pricematch to other stores mail in rebates, Only to pricematch to other stores Instant rebates. I asked him where this new policy was and he pointed me to a page that said nothing about what he was talking about. He later admitted that the new policy was only really applying to this hard drive. I'll try my luck again in the morning and just cancel if I can't get it.
err called and after price match he said it was 105. don't know how you other's got the price down below that. i canceled the order.

I'd really like to get in on this deal (I had a hardcore physical hard drive crash, so I need a new hard drive) but I'm confused as to the process. And where are the coupons? I've checked the usual suspects (obese wallet, and some others). I'll look a little harder (google is my friend, I know). But if someone could just clarify a little bit what the process is for this, I'd be REALLY appreciative. I've actually never done a pricematch type deal, so I'm a little new at this. Whatever is simplest works for me (i.e. if it's easier to do it over the phone, I don't mind if it costs me a couple of extra bucks).

Thanks again for the hot deals!

It's a little late for this deal. The rebate is gone now I think.

got mine yesterday by g'd ol' "brown". Prompt free shipping and a sweet hard drive. Thanks a lot Lurker501 and to all who've put their 0.02 regarding haggling the CSRs. I installed this into my hard drive enclosure yesterday. I just hope the fan is good enough to cool this large and fast mofo.

Sigh. I had to go with a WD 80gig (8meg Cache) for $94 from Dell. That and an Orinoco 802.11 card for $140 isn't bad, but I still wish I'd gotten in on this.

Sigh.

I snooze, I lose (although I snoozed because I'm scared of CSRs...)

You could have gotten a Maxtor 160GB 8MB dirve for $98.00 at Staples.com after a PM to Fry's like I did yesterday.
