THG - Rant-O-Matic: When Hard Drive Warranties And Expectations Collide
here's a couple exerpts..
"By now, most readers know that three of the largest hard drive manufacturers have announced their "unpopular news" that, effective October 1st, 2002, their normal warranties for most ATA hard drives will be reduced to one year. Consumers, as well as OEMs, are accustomed to the standard three-year warranties that these hard drive manufacturers have previously offered on their ATA hard drives, and they are not at all happy with this news."
"
Maxtor - As of October 1, 2002, Maxtor offers a Standard Warranty Period of 1 year on the following ATA drives: Maxtor Fireball, DiamondMax and DiamondMax Plus. Maxtor MaXLine ATA premium drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 3 years. Maxtor Atlas SCSI drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 5 years."
"
Western Digital - Western Digital standard products manufactured on or after October 1, 2002, carry a one-year warranty and are eligible for extended warranty... WD Special Edition products feature a three-year warranty."
"
Maxtor - Maxtor's one-year limited warranty only affects Maxtor Fireball, DiamondMax and DiamondMax Plus retail hard drives shipped on or after October 1, 2002.
Maxtor will continue to honor the Maxtor warranty statement printed on or in the retail packaging."
