A good place to get Amazon coupons is on DVD Talk forums (DVD Bargains section)

They have a sticky thread there that usually stays upto date...

I have not bought a 1 year warrenty HD yet, but for the most part I don't really think I need one. Even a 1 year (plus a credit card additional year) is enough so see if you will have problems with the drive. I don't use a hard drive (as my main system drive for longer then two years anyway. I don't trust it plus, if you shop around and find a good deal, they are cheap enough. 110 dollars for 2 years of main service and then X number of years as a storage/backup drive is a pretty good deal. Then you upgrade to a faster/better hard drive. I have owned many hard drives over the years and have only had to RMA 2 drives. I have had way more faulty Video cards...motherboards..ect...

As always YMMV

thats the exact opposite from my experiences. Other than 2 sticks of crucial ddr, the only items that I ever had to RMA are HD's. From all the major mfgs too. Only mfg I haven't had to return was IBM and thats because I stayed as far away from them as I could.

Thanks for the link by the way

This is wierd. Earlier today I went to the Amazon page and it clearly showed the rebate price with
a link to the rebate. Now it no longer shows the rebate price or the link to the rebate.
I then went to the Maxtor site and it shows the rebate with a valid date until the 22nd.
I wonder if Amazon pulled the info to stop price matching?

Arrgh!!
Just a minute too late. I was on the phone and the rep went to check the site and it had just been updated. Does anyone have a scan or link of confirmation?

Yes, I would be greatly appreciative if someone could either provide a printed out page or a scan of the rebate form.

Thanks

You can find the rebate form on Maxtor's website. I just saw it a few minutes ago.

What you need to do is point out the rebate to the Staples CSR on maxtor's website that the rebate is exclusively for amazon purchases. Then you should be able to perform the pricematch without any problems.

If the hard drive fails and you lose everything on it, no warranty is going to help you out. So, yes, you are protecting a $110 investment, but you're not protecting anything actually ON the drive

When a company offers a warranty on a drive, the company wants the warranty to expire before the drive. If they're confident in offering a 3 year warranty, it's because they don't expect many drives to die within 3 years. If this were a math class, I'd write an equation to put this whole post in a nutshell:

Anticipated Product Lifespan < Warranty

You look at server-grade hardware, it's built tougher - I bought a 300W power supply the other day, it weighs frickin' 4.2lb (most consumer-grade 300W are around 3). You know why it's built like that? Besides being for a server (quite often mission critical), there's also a good chance that there'll be a service contract on that server - probably with guaranteed uptime & trouble ticket response times. So, if anything in that server goes belly up, it comes out of the server mfg's pocket - that'll cost a lot more than a dead consumer grade drive getting RMA'd via UPS ground - so It Better Not Die.

Bean Counter: "If we drop warranties to one year, we can use cheaper components & let quality control slide - we'll pocket the difference - after all, drives will only need to live 1 year. We can sell our stock options (or even the company), & pass the buck once our reputation gets tarnished."

Remember IBM hard drives, or a little company called Enron?

I run all my stuff in RAID-1, so I can just call up maxtor and RMA the dead drive, while my system runs on the hot spare. I'd like to continue doing this for the next 3 years.

Agree. Warranty and data protection are independent issues. Even if I don't use RAID-1, but I do regular backups, in the event that the drive fails, I would still need to RMA the drive and get a replacement to restore the backup. In this case, I don't lose any data (except data after the last backup, which can be minimal if backups are frequent enough), but I still need a valid warranty to do the RMA and get a replacement drive. If the warranty only lasts for a year, that means if this happens after a year, I'll have to shell out another $110 to buy a new drive. I don't know about you, but $110 is not a trivial amount to me.

Now I can't get the coupon to work and it refuses to give me free shipping.
It wants to charge $8.65 shipping for ground and there is no other option, but overnight.
I was going to order this, but not now.

How can I get staples rep to PM without a problem? They say they can't PM because rebate is for Amazon.com only

I didn't want to bother with the rebate, so I PMed it at Staples instead. They did tack on next day shipping ($14.99) though, it came out to about $117 after coupon and tax. Still not too shabby IMHO.

This HD is OOS at Amazon.com, I managed to find their phone number but the rep swore on her life that they only do sales through the internet and not over the phone. I asked her if there was anything she could do, like put one aside for me and she said no.

This deal is dead, there is less than 1 1/2 days for this item to be back in stock and I don't think it's gonna happen.

However, PMing at Staples is still possible, but I really don't understand how people are doing it.

Would someone be so kind to PM me an online code for Staples. My order is at 135.

A 20 or 30 off 100 would be great.

The L01P120 appears to be only offered through a third-party merchant now (OfficeDepot) so it no longer qualifies for free shipping, and the price is $10 higher ($179.95). Since you're purchasing through Amazon.com, I would think you could still qualify for the $50 rebate.

Oh well, at $1/GB, there will be better deals.
