This drive is listed as 'generic'. Would you happen to know if it is indeed the Maxtor version? The store flier also lists it as generic, showing a picture of the drive itself rather than the box.

Thanx.

The mailing address on the rebate form shows maxtor. That's the only way so far I've been able to connect the two.

Would you happen to know if this drive will fare well in a Yamaha CRW2100IX CD-RW Firewire enclosure (includes Oxford 811 chip) ?

I'm undecided between this CompUSA deal and the Maxtor 200GB 8MB ($228)at newegg to stick in the same interface. I really don't know if the firewire enclosure can support the drives at IDE ULTRA ATA133. My educated guess is that the hard drive interface will slow down to synch with whatever the enclosure can support. I'm looking to use the drive externally now and internally later, so the extra speed will come in handy.

I'm digitizing about 400 folk audio tapes as .wav files and need to have these in a highly mobile package. Like a 200Gig drive. CDs take up too much space and time to burn, as do DVDs (I'm under time constraints). I also would need to do slight rearranging of files onto drive and create listening versions (probably mp3), so hard drive looks best for the $ now.

Thanks.

Alex

Price grabber says the cheapest price is $224

It's the ultra series with a 8mb buffer and it's 7200 RPM.

Use Fluid dynamic bearings like the seagates so should be quiet.....

Is this a "stand in line waiting for the store to open" hot deal?

Pricegrabber refers to the WD WESTERN DIGITAL 200GB with ATA/100, not ATA/133. I'd spend the extra $4 on the Matrox for 133.

NO

I'm talking about price grabber for this exact model number L01P160 . I'm comparing apples to apples

Price Grabber search lowest price is like 240 or something

Reading the specs on my 600SC I would need an Ultra 133 Adapter to use this big bad boy?

This is a CONFIRMED maxtor HD, 8MB version.
I went to a local compusa (Houston) and picked up one.
Price list: 299, but it rang up 179 and you get the 50 rebate.

DEFINITELY HOT!!!

I second that!

Got one too.

With the add listing the drive as "generic" I was expecting some controlerless white box version.

The maxtor Ultra 133 PCI controller alone sells for $49.95 at compusa, and the cheapest Ultra 133 PCI controller was $$39.

So great deal, especially if you do not have on-board Ultra 133 to take advantage of this humongoush hard drive.

I didn't realize there was still a doubt.

Maxtor part no
"Manufacturer's Mail In Rebate" slip addressed was to "Maxtor Rebates'
CompUSA recently been using Maxtor drives as CompUSA "generic" drives

Well theirs definitely no doubt when you are holding one in your hand!

Just giving some "real life" input to back up the web research.

Also no where until machintos post did I see mention of a free Ultra 133 PCI card. I almost did not make the trip to CompUSA this morning because my motherboard only supprots Ultra 100 which I think is only good up to 137 GB or something.

I picked up one of these.

Definitely a good deal for $130 after MIR.

And the controller card sweetens the deal.

Staples just added this drive to their inventory. Pricematch with them and use whatever coupon you can find. I'll let someone else figure out the final price

Dang! Deals looks good but $5 shipping and $15 taxes ruines it a bit. Comes down to $150 incl. tax/shipping (or $0,94c/Gb). I prefer the deal at Outpost where you can get a WD180/8Mb retail for $0,91c/Gb ($164 incl. notax/shipping). On top of that, you get 3 years warranty instead of 1. Worth the extra $14 (and of course, 20 Gb extra).

Shipping is free if you pick it up in the store but the WD does look ilike a good price.

What brand Ultra 133 does the WD come with?

Expected a "no name" Ultra 133 controller but was pleasantly surprised it is made by Promise (looks like a Ultra133 TX2)

Now back in "the day" Promise used to rule the IDE controller market. How is their newer stuff?

Cheapest I can find the Ultra133 TX2 on the web is $36 at newegg.
