I know what you mean. Maxtor has been slipping in quality of late. I just replaced an 80GB Maxtor 2 days ago because it was making some loud clicking noises. Got the drive a little over a year ago -- Oct. 2003. Oh well.

I could be wrong, but after reading the fine print in the coupon, you can't combine the coupon with other coupons or instant savings/rebates.

I found the coupon as well. Do the staples cashiers just not care and do it anyhow? I wanna get this drive, and I found the 10$ off the 40$ purchase thing.

Thanks for information from experienced hot dealers. . .

Most cashiers in my experience don't even look at the fine print that's on the coupon. All they really care about is that the coupon hasn't expired (though they've accepted them a few times even if it did expire) and that the minimum purchase requirement has been met. But of course, YMMV depending on the store, employee, manager, etc.

I know the employees at the store I frequent very well because the company I work for spends so much money there. They take care of us because I know that they'd hate to lose us as customers.

This particular HD is the only HD I've ever had die on me, and I've had a *lot* of HD's in my time (I have 10 running right now and 9 of them are older than this one.)

If you think this is a good deal, go for it. But I suggest that you either 1) buy 2 and Raid 'em to protect your data, 2) get used to regularly backing-up your data, or 3) move onto the next great HD deal... There have been a lot of good ones going on lately.

Please note, that I'm not crapping on Maxtor in particular (I have 3 other Maxtors in my rigs), but I am crapping on *this* particular drive. It is worth noting that they've changed the logic board on the newer 160's (ata), so maybe this adresses last years production issues... but then again, maybe not.

How much is your data worth?

Seems to me that no matter the brand, each company has "issues" with certain runs. These days, you are taking a gamble no matter which company you pick, and you always end up backing up the data. Doesn't matter if you pay a price premium or not. I have seen raptors fail, cheetahs fail and deathstarts fail within the first yea, and some in a few months.. Yet some of the cheapest drives around have been running for over 5 years with no problems.

Good Warranty & High price don't automatically mean it is a better product.

You would have to RAID 1 them to mirror the drive, then you get 1/2 as much storage space, but you will have a auto backup. Hopefully both drives don't die on you at the same time.

Would it be illegal to "edit" the fine print on the coupon? Search f@twallet for the coupon.

Edit: "Edit" as in erase.

one would think so. i think you'd be better off just hoping to find a dumb cashier who doesnt pay attention to details. i am just going to order mine of the web site and hope i can apply the coupon there

This would make a good backup drive. Throw in a $30 USB enclosure from Newegg, and you have a fine backup system.

Running only an hour or two a week, that little drive should last a long time.

Hahaha. While you "edit" the coupon why don't you just make it into a $45 off $50? As always, YMMV when trying this

Why stop there? Might as well make it $100 off a $50 purchase or something like that. Make them pay you for shopping at their store.

i think when he said edit the fine print, i think he meant the expiration date and all the little junk down there. the $ off $ is usually NOT in the fine print. as for changing the $ off $ amount or the expiration date, i wouldn't recommend it. their systems will know what the coupon really is, unless u find a dumb enough manager who's willing to override the system.

fine print says

Minimum purchase requirement of $75 must be met with purchases to which no other coupon or instant savings offer applies. May not be combined with any other coupon.

So does that mean we won't have to find something for $5.01 to make the total $75.00?
