Hahaha. While you "edit" the coupon why don't you just make it into a $45 off $50? As always, YMMV when trying this

Why stop there? Might as well make it $100 off a $50 purchase or something like that. Make them pay you for shopping at their store.

Because it won't work. They have to key in a coupon code that takes off the discount. If the cashier gives a crap about their job, they'll probably read the fine print and kill the deal.

I was just kidding, in case you didn't get it.

I just picked one up @ my local B&M last night (last one on the shelf), with a $10 off $40 coupon... waiting to open it until after I get the new price on the 23rd.

Hopefully since the coupon is already applied they won't even know about the fine print concerning combining the coupon with an instant discount:

$69.94
-$10.00 coupon
$59.94
+ 8.25% crappy-ass NY sales tax
$64.89 out the door

Thanks for the heads up

And I haven't had an issue with a maxtor drive since a 30 gig I had a while back, which was RMA'd without a problem.

Actually, you are right. The $10 off $40 coupon reads:
Minimum purchase requirement of $40 must be met with purchases to which no other coupon or instant savings offer applies.
Now, that's not to say it wouldn't be worth a shot. Not all cashiers are going to either know this or take the time to read the fine print. Definitely a YMMV as to whether it would work.
I also agree that Maxtor drives have been no problem to me. I have two in my personal desktop system and neither one has so much as burped in the two years its been up and running. Same with the wife's system of three years age.

Edit: Just realized that this post is a bit late in the discussion but I would add that you shouldn't mess with "Editing" anything on the coupon. It's just not worth the risk. You could, by chance get a studious cashier who knew the diff and would turn your sorry arse in. Not worth $10 to me as there is only one Staples in our town and no Fry's, CrapUSA or any such outlets.

1 year warranty, Maxtor, only 160Gb and non-SATA make this a non-deal for me

Why yes I do.... On 3 out of 6 machines. I don't run anything but the drivers, of course....

If you have mirroring enabled (ie, raid 1), then running known problematic drives becomes slightly less problematic. However, with the bad rep Maxtor has recently, I would be careful what I put on new Maxtor drives. In my case, it's not too relevant, since I have "main" machines and secondary experimental machines. These drives would be fine for the experimental machines.

Does the coupon work when clearance items are included in the purchase? I'm thinking I might go after one of those clearance DVD-RW's (the Pacific Digitals that were reported to be on clearance for $38).

are you guys sure the 10 off 40 coupon will work on this?

on the coupon it reads:

Offer expires 1/30/05. Valid in store only. Limit one per customer. Minimum purchase requirement of $40 must be met with purchases to which no other coupon or instant savings offer applies. May not be combined with any other coupon. Coupon must be surrendered. No cash/credit back. Not valid on purchase of gift cards and prior purchases. Tax not included in calculating minimum purchase.

the 40 dollars off is a instant rebate so i believe this coupon will not work. tell me if im wrong.

Trying it now at 12:18 EST. Probably their time is not EST. Anyway, this is PATA 133 7200RPM. If you don't mind the cable (which you probably have already had) then this runs as fast as those SATA HDD out there.

i just checked it now and the model shows up as the L01P160 which is the exact drive i bought 3 months earlier for 95 bucks. im using it right now and i can tell you its a big improvement over my seagate 80gb 2mb cache. its quite noisy however but im not in need of a silent pc.

does not apply the $15 coupon in the cart online, even though it says it will. Anyone had success getting the $15 off appear in the cart?

You're right. The $15 off is suppose to appear automatically, but it doesn't. Probably a computer error. Hopefully they'll have it worked out by morning. Otherwise, I'll just pick up in store.

Only the $25 off coupon code (86506) works right now.

I just tried to get OD to PM the HD to Staples with no luck.

OD has it for $90 - $30 MIR. If you get them to PM to staples, you can get it for $70 - $30 MIR = $40 AR. Great deal, but I was shut down by 2 different CSRs over the phone. Reason: OD's AR price is lower than Staples' ($60 vs. $70).

Ordered, $75 and change after tax. The 200gig for $80 from outpost is a better deal, but I needed this 3rd 160 for a RAID5.

Just got mine at Staples .... but .....

I hereby am returning my Anandtech Hot Deals member card. :frown:

I did not have the guts to drop the 15 off 75 coupon I had along. I had fillers to make it over 75 but the girl at the counter started asking me about the football games on today. Threw me for a loop, and I thought I couldn't argue with her about the coupon at that point .... I'm such a putz.

So, she social-engineered you out of a deal instead of you engineering your way into a deal?
