Going on during August 10th to August 16th. Check your Local Circular @ Staples.com
Maxtor 160 gig Hard Drive with 8 meg cache, 7,200 RPM

- $159.98
+ small filler
- $30 off $150 Coupon
- $10 Instat Savings
- $40 mail-in-rebate
= $80

Note: Some people at Fatwallet say they were able to stack the 12% customer appreciation coupon with the 30$ off 150$. The mail-in-rebate is printed from the cash register when you buy the item.

This deal is currently B&M because there is no valid online 30% off 150$ coupon at this time.

i calculate $80.

$159.98 - $10 instant = $149.98 out the door
$149.98 + filler = $150+
$150+ - $30 off $150 coupon = $120+
$120+ - $40 MIR = $80+

Nice deal, but with only a 1 year warranty? :disgust:

I'm seriously worried about the 4 Maxtor 120GB HDD I got on earlier Hot Deals. All with 1 year warranties. RMA'd a Maxtor 100GB (w/ 3 year waranty) I got last year for $69 from CompUSA. I'm avoiding Maxtor from now on and get Western Digitals. Sorry for the rant.

My thoughts exactly. I had three brand new Maxtors crash within two months this year. Compared to my WD master drive, which is on the same IDE chain, which I have had ZERO trouble with...

As stated in the first post, check the FW forums. There is a printable $30 off $150 coupon there for B&M.

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on this deal, but I HATE that Maxtor only offers a 1 yr warranty. *sigh* I shoulda kept the $120 WD 200GB SE drive I got a few weeks ago.

I hope there are some more West Dig hard drive deals coming down the pike very soon. I want an $80 160GB WD deal.

Yea, I bought a 120 back in June on a staples deal and used it to back up my files while I changed motherboards. I put it back in to get my files off and nothing. Bios won't even detect the drive. :| At least it failed before the warranty is up.

Good deal though. I might have to pick up one. Too bad it is so late I could have paired it with the other one I bought a couple of weeks ago and used it for my raid.

people at FW are saying that one can use the Customer Appreciation 12% coupon with a $30 coupon...it DOES say "take an extra 12% off". Valud Aug 8-10 (and 3 other days later in august).

That would bring the drive down to $66 AR

$149.98 + fillers = $150+
$150+ - $30 coupon = $120+
$120+ - (12% of $120 = $14.40) = $105.60
$105.60 - $40 MIR = $65.60

Darn hot if you ask me.

and i think this comes with an ATA133 card. If it doesnt, $65.60 for 160 gigs comes out to $0.41/gig (120gig HD you would be have to pay $49.20 for $0.41/gig...heck, the deal a while ago that MysticMan1 posted that conned staples out of money which included pricematching outpost.com was only for $53, or $0.44/gig)

Yeah this is scorching if you can stack the 12% cust appreciation coupon (though I imagine by now they are becoming aware of this tactic, AT + FW effect has to be pretty strong). YMMV for sure on that.

Still, I've got a half a mind to friggin boycott Maxtor because of their crappy warranty policy. Yes, it's a great price on the drive, but if it only lasts 1/3 as long as a WD, the GB/Price/Useable timeframe ratio is crappy.

I guess the whole question is whether Maxtor actually expects a lower MTBF on these drives and the 1 year warranty reflects this down-graded expected lifetime. If so, I say pass on any Maxtor product. Losing hard-drive content can have serious consequences for people who use their computers professionally. Backing up is a necessity nowadays, but there's no reason to buy a drive that's rated to fail 3 times as often as the competition's offering.

I would say be carefull of ANY manufacturers drives these days. I've seen drives from all of them fail. All these HOT Deals make the price per Gig low enough to justify using a Mirror Set.
That's what I've been doing, even with the 3yr warranty WD's. What's your Data worth to you ?
