Yes, the drive is eligible for the Maxtor rebate. But both Maxtor and OD requires original UPC. How to get around that?

Is it possible that it could have been defective and is making that noise. Do any of you hear a "revving up" sound when it starts? I might be able to figure out if its defective if people tell me what theres are like.

Maxtor provides an acoustic management utility for its drives which can reduce the noise level of a hard disk seek operation. Check it out here.

I dunno, there's only been about 80 quadrillion posts in the last week

FYI, my drive, purchased the morning of the 2nd & then unilaterally cancelled by OfficeDepot & subsequently repurchased by me early on Friday (see my earlier post), is now scheduled to be delivered TOMORROW (monday). Impressive, almost makes up for the earlier incompetence! I'm not sure why others saw this as out of stock on Friday & Saturday, a friend ordered it no problems early Saturday afternoon, scheduled delivery the 13th.

correct me if I'm wrong, but this isn't for this particular drive, is it?

thetaz, I'm well aware of what you have stated, however, my point was that for owners of an ATA/133 equipped IDE controllers, actually taking advantage of the higher occassional burst rate can't be a bad thing, especially for $30, LOL. By the way, I was able to pricematch the $99 online price at the store, read my reply on the first page for details of what happened, and thank VH2000 for the idea.

Peace

A big thanks to MarkM for sending me the rebate form! (Office Depot pulled it from their website.)

The loud noise, is from bearing shock. Sudden jarring will damage any hard drive (don't know about the new fluid-bearing ones though)... this has nothing to do with Maxtor, couldn've just as easily been an IBM that got damaged.

Everyone should've gotten a CDROM in their package, it has that on it, and maybe it's on the floppy too.

I have two of these drives now... One is real quiet, the other has a louder bearing noise, but nowhere near as loud as firestorm225's.

I got mine today it is the 6L model I am happy bout that.

how did you tell what model you have -- did you open it up? i just got mine, I don't see any mention of a 6L model number on the box, all it says is "Kit: ST0152000H" and addtl info, 2mb buffer, ultra ata/100 (NOT 133), avg access <8.7ms. I would like to know which drive it is before I open the box. Thanks.

I did not get a receipt either, so I called OD customer service and they faxed it to me. I guess you could also print the receipt from the web and use it.

you use the receipt you printed out of your computer after you made the purchase online. you did print out the page that said "print this out," didn't you?

about the 6L thing, ya, you gotta open that baby up to see if you are the lucky winner.

We have another 6l winner!. I haven't installed it yet (can't figure out which system needs it the most) but for 30 bucks, who cares! You can go to the office depot website and go to "your orders" and print our a copy of your receipt and yes they will accept it, at least that's what the CSR said.

OK, I opened it up, and sure enough, D740X-6L. Boy, now do I have a dilemma ... got carried away and also bought the 120gb 7200 rpm WD drive via the compusa deal ...

Now, I confess I haven't read all 80 gazillion posts here, but hasn't EVERYONE gotten the 6L?

Warriorfan,

I ordered online and got an "invoice" with my order. Sounds like some of you didn't get one.
