Just got mine today.. and its the D740X-6L. What a box it comes in!! Spent about five minutes trying to open the box without demolishing it, and went with the demolishing method... Its like a Rubix cube..!

Wow. I just listened to the sound file you posted. My guess is that you have a defective drive. That *really* sounds bad. Have you decided to return it?

Bob

<< I got this drive two days ago, and I have to say I am really dissapointed. It is so damn load, it makes a revving up noise when it starts and continues with a slightly high pitched noise while its on, its about as loud as my CPU fan. This sucks considering my IMB Deskstar is so quiet and only makes noise when accessing things. Im getting my packaging ready and I think I will be returning it.

Edit: I put up a sound file of what it sounds like (I put my microphone next to the hard drive:

Very bad if you ask me.

I was thinking of returning it, but I was afraid that they would send me the new one after the rebate period ended, and since its over now, I guess theres not much I can do except pass on this deal.

Early this year when there was a similar deal with Staples for a 15 gig Maxtor, I got a defective one (loud). I RMA'd it with Maxtor. However, when I called it in I gave them a sob story about (true though) all the work I'd done in getting my system set up for my son for his b-day so they gave me an upgraded RMA and replaced the 15 with a 60 gig. So if it were me, I'd run their diag program and get the code, assuming it generates one, and get it replaced.

I've got the hard drive installed in my system on my raid connection because I ran out of IDE connections for it.
Anyway, I've got some info and statistics on it compared with the two other hard drives I've got in my system. You can take a look at Stats and Comparision of hard drives in my system.

From the scoring of HDTach, the drive has a faster random access time than my Western Digital 400BB and my 30 GB Maxtor. Of course, all of these on one IDE chain wouldn't even come close to the ATA133 speed, so that's pointless.

Interesting how the read burst speed of your ATA133 Maxtor 20GB HD is slower than your other ATA66 and ATA100 drives. Read burst speed should be a measurement of the interface speed, when the requested data can be found in the internal buffer. I would have expected the ATA133 drive to do the best in this area.

Well I missed ou on this one.

However there is a 40gb 7200 maxtor with a $30 MIR for $129. And the $30 off $100 still works.

Woo Hoo! My order was just upgraded from "In the Warehouse" to "On the Truck". It looks like I will get it in time for the $40 rebate deadline. Of course, it doesn't say *what* truck it's on. Perhaps it's on an ice cream truck.

Something is definitely wrong with your drive, maybe it's not using DMA? It should be a lot closer to THIS.

Here's a caution on the rebate application for online orders:

I just called the rebate center (Express Group: 1-800-741-1365) listed on the $40 rebate form asking if my order confirmation email/invoice was sufficient as the "original Office Depot sales receipt" listed on the form. She told me that this would *not* be sufficient. This is different than I was told in an earlier call to the same rebate center! So I called Office Depot directly (1-800-463-3768) and they faxed me a copy of the "Retail Order Acknowledgement" which he thought should be fine for the rebate.

While I think I'm all set right now, the contradictory information form the rebate center has me slightly concerned. So this might be a rebate to track carefully in case it gets declined.

Crud, I can't believe they could include a invoice for a lousy roll of tape that came on last Friday, but couldn't for the hard drive which I received on Monday. I sent them a email yesterday but I haven't gotten a reply back as of yet. I might end up having to give them a call as time is starting to run out to get the rebate coupon postmarked by the 15th. But I have not opened the box yet so I can always return it if I miss the deadline.

I've always had to request a fax of my online transaction (aka "Retail Order Acknowledgement") from Office Depot in order to qualify for a rebate. A printout of your order detail is not good enough. (And OD never sends me an invoice...just another hoop to jump thru to get that rebate)

Well that's good to know! I was all set to mail in the rebate request with a printout of the online order confirmation. As with all substantial rebates, I will have a copy of everything in case there is a problem.

OK! My drive arrived today and it was packed with an invoice. Now should I send that in for the rebate or the "Retail Order Acknowledgement" that was faxed to me?

Maybe I should send in both? (But that might cause their heads to explode.)

Bob

Also: It did show up packed in a Office Depot box.

Regarding what to send in for the rebate for an online order: I just got off the phone with the rebate center (Expressgroup.com). They told me to be sure and send in *both* the order acknowledgement fax *and* the invoice that came with the drive. This seems like total overkill since both forms have the same information but I'll do it to be sure. For those of you that did not receive an invoice I would request that Office Depot mail you one in the event your rebate is declined.

warriorfan, have it faxed to CopyMax or Kinko's and then go pick it up from there. They usually charge like .50 / page, but it's a great alternative if you don't have a fax machine.

If you got an invoice with your drive I would think that you're OK. I have to believe that sending both the "faxed "order acknowledgement" *and* the invoice is a bit of overkill. The both contain the same information with different formatting.

But, if you still want to get the "order acknowledgement", you might want to call OD and ask if they can somehow email it to you.

And AceTKK's suggestion is also a good one.

Or just request that OD snail mail you a copy and you'll have it ready to go in case there's a problem.

Good Luck!

best thing to do is go to B&M OD. They can print out invoice /receipt and can print out rebate form. I have had Walled Lake reject rebates that were submitted using rebate pddf file from OD website -- rejection said didn't submit original form!!!!!!!

Folks, regarding the fax (or lack there of), there's a real nifty little solution that I'm surprised you have not discovered in your quest for bargains.

Visit www.j2.com, and sign up for JConnect Free. You get your own fax number and anything faxed there gets sent right to your email in TIF format.

Pretty darn slick, if ya ask me.
