I think this is good specialy with no rebates there might be cheaper prices out there but they probably involve reabtes and pata.

Ive been looking at 250gig SATA drives for a while. i think the seagate one is a better deal. you get 5 year warranty for $137 total.

I guess that comes down to personal preference. If you think it's worth the extra $8.50 for the Seagate, that's cool. I had to spend $8.50 recently to send one of my Seagates in for RMA

Seagate rebates can be hell. I'll never buy one expecting a rebate again.

This one is 5 years warranty as well. (At least ZZF web site says ) So, if the description ZZF provides is correct, like dbleoslow says, you are just paying $ 8.50 extra for the same amount, somewhat slower (in general Maxtor is faster), and the same warranty length.

And yeah, not only Seagate MIR, but any MIR is pain in the back. I prefer not to buy the one with MIR unless it's like 50 or more bux cheaper.

i was talking about teh seagate drive at ZZF without rebate with 5 year warranty. but you are right, this maxtor drive has 5 year warranty too., so maxtor is the way to go then!

I have had two Maxtor drives die on me, but yet to have a Seagate fail.

YMMV, but I would gladly pay upto 10% more for a comparable Seagate drive any day of the week.

And also, I have done 6 Seagate rebates so far and except for one of them taking longer (about 6 months) I have had no issues.

Again ... YMMV. I am just sharing my experience with Seagate.

I think with HDD it's a big YMMV. Everyone has different experiences with different drives. The only people that bug me are the one's who still complain about the IBM "click of death" drives from like 1000 years ago.

The only Maxtor drive I have had fail was a 6.4GB drive that was DOA (they replaced it with an 11.x GB drive so I was actually happy on this one). My Seagate 200GB didn't fail but lost file data and required reformat. After reformatted, the Seagate is running fine now - not sure what caused the drive to lose file tables (it was in a ReplayTV PVR).

The Maxtor deal looks good to me. Besides, it's now $9.75 (as of 3pm EST 4/18) cheaper than the Seagate. Thanks OP.

Sweet deal, if that 5 year warranty info is legit, these would be great for a nice RAID 1 setup.

It seems worth the risk since you are getting a bigger disk that's worth more.

You mean the one that's PATA and not SATA?

The comparable Seagate drive 7200.8 SATA, I would have to say, is a slightly better deal. The Maxtor drive does indeed have a 5 year warranty (manuf. info), but the Seagates seem to have better performance, NCQ, quieter operation, and presumably better reliability, judging by Storagereview info on both drives (Maxtor vs. Seagate). Granted, they use the 400GB Seagate model in the review. Personally, I'd pay the extra $10 per drive just for probable increased reliability, but this is a good deal nonetheless.

edit: it's interesting that the Seagate 250GB model actually has 266GB of available storage, but they choose to program the drive to recognize only 250GB. I wonder if there's a hack to access the added storage.

Forgive me for mouthing off, but you can get these drives CHEAPER on eBay. That's quite unusual for a Hot Deal on a hard drive.

Umm.. I kinda doubt it. I just looked over ebay by searching "Maxtor 250GB SATA". Most of the Buy It Now price is like over 150 (duh!). There are quite few 130s *before* shipping (We all know how ebayer makes money with shipping charge, don't we?). The serial number provied for $115 BIN is kinda bogus, which only covered by warranty from dealer (no maxtor direct warranty). One active auction is currently priced at 137.50, and it's only with 1 year warranty. Anyway, where did you find it cheaper on ebay? or do you just want to do thread crapping?

Yeah, in regards to the Ebay thing, these drives used to have 3 year warranties, so who knows what you'll get if you go that route.

I was looking at the Seagate 250's and found that they have NCQ and 5 year warranty and can get it from a reliable reseller - eWiz for $129 shipped.

Link

With less than a $2 difference, I am jumping on the Seagate and still no rebate so it is better, in my opinion, than the Outpost/Fry's deal.

I am not thread crapping, you just made me do my research on extra space that I need.
