Sadly, I am returning my drive to CompUSSR as the retail drives really do only carry a 1 yr. warranty.

The following Standard Warranty Period will apply to Maxtor products purchased by distributors from Maxtor on or after September 12, 2004:
Maxtor Fireball®, DiamondMax® ATA/SATA and DiamondMax Plus ATA /SATA drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 3 years.
Maxtor MaXLine? ATA/SATA drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 5 years.
Maxtor Atlas® SCSI drives will continue to carry a Standard Warranty Period of 5 years.
Maxtor branded retail hard drive kits will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 1 year.
Maxtor external hard drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 1 year, with the exception of the Maxtor Personal Storage 3000LS and PS3100 drives, which have a Standard Warranty Period of 90 days in North America.
In EMEA, Maxtor external hard drives and Maxtor branded retail hard drive kits will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 2 years.

Amazingly, retail drives have less warranty than OEM/bare drives, yet retail drives usually cost a good deal more (cables don't cost that much!). This is not just a Maxtor phenomenon, same applies for WD drives.

by giving OEMs longer warrenties, they encourage the sale of OEM over retail, i.e. drives that are higher in price per gig rather than the retail which usually comes with rebates and turns out to be less per gig

pata and sata is implemented on existing drives for the most point
150mbs vs 133/100 is not it its the 30 or 40mbs the drive can actually do
the point is lower power and tiny cables on the sata

now they add a sata chip to a raptor which is rather fast and sata chips to some high rpm drives
none of this applys to the SATA seagate drives that were designed as sata drives, allthough slower than "sata" drives from historiclly less reliable drive makers

this also applys to sata2

I used 2 be there retail kits were 3yrs and there oem was only 1yr

This has been how maxtors done it for a while along with western digital and who knows who else

I have a feeling its still the case, newegg has got there info wrong, compusa got theres wrong, and maxtors got there own online tracking system wrong

LOL, I know sounds like a long shot, but I beleive it to be the case if you called maxtor and asked them

Strangely, it all used to be the opposite, a few years back, before the big "Rebate wave". OEM/white-box drives sold by local vendors were cheaper than the fancy, expensive, full "Retail kit" packages, but usually the OEM/white-box drives had a shorter warranty. Now... everything is backwards! What is the world coming to.

I heard that it was a conspiracy between the big drive makers and the big retailers, this gives the retailers the chance to "upsell" their normally-rather-useless store warranty plans. Makes sense, disturbingly enough. (Same reason why some items, like printers, sold through the big-name retailers, are missing items, like USB cables, compared to the kits sold through other channels.)

Edit: Unfortunately, JohnDoe, it may be backwards, but it is indeed true. The change came about during the big drive warranty changes in late 2003.

This is for the parallel ata version, not the serial ata version. This is also a retail kit.

I know what you're saying, but your "this" is ambiguous". To clarify:

The Newegg drive is SATA 150 NCQ (and the current price is $199.67, shipped), OEM.

The Compusa drive is ATA 133 (and the current price appears to be $229, unless I'm missing something), Retail.

The comparison between the 150mbs speed of SATA and the 133 or 100 mbs speed of PATA is really not valid. What's important is the actual speed limitation of the hard drives themselves, typically 30mbs to 40 mbs.

The true advantages of SATA are lower power and smaller cables.

To create the current generation of SATA drives, all most manufacturers do is add SATA chips to existing non-SATA drives, such as the Raptor or other high-RPM drives.

The last statement does NOT apply to SATA HDs produced by Seagate, which are designed from the ground up as SATA, even though the Seagate SATA drives are slower than the chip-added "SATA" drives produced by historically less-reliable HD makers.
