There seems to be some confusion as to the specs of this drive. From my research, and according to the model # (ST0154000U), this is only an ATA/66 drive. The "U" designation in the model number is for Maxtor's ATA/66 series drives, while "H" is for ATA/100. So unless Office Depot & Staples screwed up on the model number, this is an ATA/66 drive.

I opened the box and can see through the anti-static packaging and my drive is a D740X-6L which, according to Maxtor's web site is the Ultra ATA 133 Dynamic Bearing Motors drive.

It's sort of confusing because the side of the box says "ST0154000U <8.7ms, Data Transfer Rate 100 MBytes/sec", BUT there was also a sticker on the cellophane which reads "ST0154000U MAXTOR 40GB 7200 U66" so the only thing I can figure is that they are using boxes from the DiamondMax 40GB (which comes in both ATA100 and ATA66 - in this case the sticker on the side of the box said ATA100) to package the ATA133 drives.

As to why there was a sticker on the cellophane which read "U66" I don't know. There was a red mark through it (obviously made by hand with a marker), so it's almost like the "auto cellophane" wrapping was kicking out these "U66" stickers and someone was "nulling" them with the red mark.

The ATA133 label on the front of the box is a stick on label, but, like I said, the drive itself is labeled as a D740X-6L which makes the deal even sweeter for me.

I really doubt that any of the drives at OD are ATA66, but if you want an ATA133 drive I guess you should look for the ATA133 label on the front.

Flight23, Thanks for update. My OD is so anal, they would never accept an online Staples printout for price matching. But I did do the OD online with the $20 FW coupon and Staples PM and $30 MIR to get one for a total of $55 last night. Good enough for me.

As Forrest Gump might say: "Buying retail box maxtor drives is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get." Maxtor retail drive box numbers have always had a very loose relationship to what is inside. The only guarantees are the capacity and the spindle speeds. IIRC some retail box drives that had ATA-100 stickers on them actually did not have ATA-100 drives inside them. Maxtor replaced those drives on request.

Basically, you order the retail box and hope you get lucky....

I'm confused. Did you pay the full price or were you able to use the coupon and/or pricematch?

My OD is so anal about stuff that I would NEVER EVEN TRY this w/ them! NEVER! They would practically CHASE me outta the store if I tried this The last time I was in there I was PriceMatching my ViewSonic A90 down (b/c they had lowered the price again) and the girl behind the counter took it completely personally!

SUCH a joke!

GOOD LUCK TO UALL!

Why are people so concerned whether it's ATA-100 or 133? Are your transfers maxing out at 100 MB/sec and you wish you had more room? I think not! Heh. It's gonna perform the same, regardless, unless the ATA-133 drive also has some mechanical difference from the ATA-100 one (even then, the transfer speed will probably jump from 34 MB/s to 34.5 MB/sec - w00t!). If I'm missing something obvious, feel free to enlighten me.

$84.54

how are you getting that price?

129.99 - 20 (OD coupon) - 10 (staples pricematch)

That leaves you with 99.99

Does OD have some sort of 110% guarantee?

Is the rebate going to Walled Lake, MI? I'd like to know. If it's not I will snap one of these up. Still waiting on my $40 rebate sent late December for the OD 5400rpm 40GB drive. Some people are starting to get theirs, I havn't yet.

Good deal on a 7200!

<< How do you apply the coupon after PM? >>

If you have a Staples nearby, you can PM against it after using the coupon online and requesting in store pick-up, cash payment. I got a similar deal by actually buying the drive at the local Staples and driving to the Twin Cities to pick up a drive I ordered online from OD using a $20 coupon. I asked for a PM at OD and when they questioned whether Staples was offering the same drive, I pulled out my Staples receipt and showed them the drive from Staples. (An advert with the model number would suffice also, but why take chances). They agreed to the PM and I reminded the cashier that I had used a $20 coupon online. He ended up using a generic coupon code to get me the additional $20 off.

Again, reminds me of the good old days when Staples let you stack a coupon and a PM. I can't believe OD will be doing this for much longer, although they had a good year profit-wise.

I got an 40gig, ATA133, fluid bearing drive that's been running great for 2-3 weeks now. OD has got my business any time I am in the Twin Cities (90 minute drive away). CompUSA has also been good for me in the Twin Cities, although I know many people have a problem with them.

good luck and just be firm but nice...

I had no problem with OD pricematching. I ordered online with a $20 coupon, then I called OD Cust Svc on their 800 number and told them I found the same drive at Staples. They said they would check it, so I gave them the Staples item number. They called back in 5 minutes and said they would match the price and adjut my order.

GREAT !!!

My brother did the same thing, but the chick at OD CustSvc wuld NOT pricematch for him. She said she had had 4-5 calls on the same thing and she wasn't going to PM any more !!! He XLD his order.

I just received my drive. Its the ATA133 model. Took less than 24 hrs for delivery. Invoice shows Staples pricematch (OD Low Price Guarantee).

poncekim,
I bought one with a PM, I didn't put the details because I didn't have any problems with a PM. I didn't use a coupon though

I just did the order online, but when I called CS they said they would honor the PM but I won't be able to get the $30 MIR. Is that even possible?

They HAVE to give it to you at the register. It rings up automatically as a rebate receipt.

This was my very first Hot deal, hope you all enjoyed !
