The $50.00 rebate is for the Maxtor Ultra 100 DMA controller card that needs to be purchased along (but not at the same time) with a 40 gig or more hard drive. You need to shell out another $50.00 ($30 plus tax if you order online and use a coupon) for the card. You are then eligible for the $50.00 rebate from Maxtor. Just my input.

Yes, you do need the Ultra ATA/100 controller. Read this thread: Maxtor Ultra/100 Controller

You can buy the controller at Staples for 50 and get 20 off, then get the 50 dollar rebate. That actually makes you about 20 dollars. Then you can auction off the controler for about 35. With a little effort, you just took another 55 off of you drive.

Guys - I"VE GOT THE REBATE FORM - just printed it out. Says clearly on it:

Offer valid on hard drive kits 40 GV or above starting with ST01, ST04, ST06, V06, K01 and K04.

The Maxtor 40 GB drive I picked up on price match at B&M Staples is a DRIVE KIT. It comes WITH an Ultra ATA/100 card, besides being 45GB instead of 40 GB. AND the Kit number is ST0154000U - which means IT QUALIFIES for the $50 rebate!!!!!!!

Well I think the deal I got is pretty good. I walked into OD with a $400 Office Depot money card that I got from Uncle Bill when people could subscribe to MSN and get $400 worth of merchandise for free with no obligation to continue the MSN service. At the time I just asked for the money card instead of the merchandise.

Maxtor 40 GB HD FREE (Normally $119)
Controller card at Staples -$31 (after $20 off coupon)
Rebate +$50
Egay card +$35
Net profit: $54

End result, a free 40GB HD and $54 cash in exchange for reducing my free money card balance by $119 + tax.

Uncle Bill has now bought me a 40 GB hard drive and an 8X CDRW and will be giving me $54 cash. I still have $150 left on the money card waiting for the next hot deal.

NightShadow, that fine print is just telling you what hard drive qualifies for the deal. You still need the card. A hard drive kit means it contains the Screws,brackets,cables and software. Kit is what they call the full retail box and OEM is just the bare drive. You will need to purchase the card also to get the rebate. If you read the whole fine print it says...

Purchase: Retail packaged Maxtor Ultra ATA/100 PCI Adapter Card purchased in combination with a Maxtor hard drive. Offer good on products purchased between September 24, 2000 $ January 27, 20001. Offer valid on hard drive kits 40GB or above starting with ST01, ST04, ST06, v06 and K04.

The last part just tells you what "kits" qualify for the rebate. "Kit" means hard drive.
Open your box and see that there is no card. Not a problem though just order the card online and use a $20 coupon to get it for $30.

I think he's mistaken. Based on the part number he provided I bought the exact same kit and mine didn't come with the ATA-100 card. A kit means that it's not a bare drive (like an oem drive). A kit includes screws, mounting brackets and usually some sort of drive installation software.

Update: I ordered my Maxtor 40GB HD online at Staples.com 24 hours ago and I STILL HAVE NOT received my e-mail order confirmation ... I sense either a significant delay or bad news (out of stock).

Probably doesn't sound good. I would give it another day since it was a holiday weekend. This is the nice thing about having a Staples B&M nearby that seems to pricematch any printed out webpage of a major competitor without even verifying. This is twice in a short period of time that they matched a web page that I printed out from OfficeDepot with no questions asked.

After everything is all said and done, I will have gotten a 46GB drive and made about 30 bucks or so.

I think it looks bad for the hd from staples. I ordered the ata100 controller from them yesterday and I got an e-mail like 1 hour after I ordered. They probably doing a massmail of hd order cancellations or something. Maybe I'll pay the B&M staples a visit and see if it they still got it.

Well I visited some Staples B&M stores and they all seem to have atleast 1 of these drives. They are the 5 gig free versions too. I asked the workers and they say they won't do a pricematch unless I have my original receipt. Hmmm I guess I can try once I get my drive from office depot.

Just walked into the local Staples, showed them the ad, asked if they can price match and walked out with a 45GB (5 gb free) fast version ATA100 for 119.99 plus tax. I hate rebates! I love 45GB of Very fast Disk Drive for under $130 out the door.

The Service was great - showed them the ad, got the price - no haggle, no calls!
