I don't think the it matters whether the HD is ATA 100 or 66 for the rebate... but you'll have no use of the PCI card it it's 66!

Cha-Ching... the line outside my staples was huge but still got a drive and the zip for 179.99.

Best of all, the drive had a sticker on it... ""FREE 5GB MORE, 45GB for the price of 40GB Plus Ultra ATA/100"

Looks like they upgraded the 40GB drive to 45GB and gave it ATA/100 capability.

So, a 45GB 7200RPM drive and USB Zip for 179.99... get rid of the Zip on you know where for about 75 or so = 104 dollars for drive. Good deal in my book.

Just got done installing the Maxtor. It is model 54610H6. It is a 46.1GB 7200RPM Ultra ATA/100 drive. The box said 40GB 7200RPM Ultra ATA/66 drive but there was a sticker on it about a free 5GB and free Ultra ATA/100. Sure enough, it is a 46GB drive. Sweet.

The Zip drive costs about 99.99 but they are unloading at auction sites for around 70.

The actual hard drive is different by stores. The hard drive on staples.com is ata 66 40 gig drive, and I called to confirm. Anyway, it's out of stcok around my home, and they said they won't restock this item.
Well, they're probably getting rid of ata 66 to restock with newer version ofata 100 drives, and for Schmo, the store might screwed up, so they gave him the new model Diamonmax plus 45. Good for him.

Well, not really, because the UPC on the box still registers as a 40GB Hard drive and has the UPC of the 40GB hard drive. You can see that there is a sticker on the box that indicates that Maxtor just put a 46GB drive in a 40GB box. As far as any computer scanning barcodes is concerned, it is a 40GB drive.

Anyway, like you said, mileage may vary and I may have just lucked out.
