Found at Staples a Maxtor 40GB external HDD for $59.50 (clearance) -- normally retails for $109.98

It's both USB 1.1 and 2.0 compatible. It has a 2MB buffr and is 5400 RPM.

Just wondering, what is the major purpose most people use external HDs for now. I mean, you can fit over 4 gig on a DVD, isn't that a more convenient format for transporting?

This sounds like a good deal, I'm just trying to find a reason why I need one. : )

because i am too poor to buy a dvd burner ($100)... and on top of that u gotta count cost of dvds.. dvd-RWs!! because u know... u can write and rewrite HDs

anyways... these usb HDDs are relatively small and portable... maybe not as portable as ur standard dvds... but good enough.

picked one up today, thanks.

I have a dvd burner and a network, but restoring a 20GB ghost image over a network takes forever, so i will try this option

I've got a 160gig external HD that I use when I take my laptop to work with me, and I much prefer it for store things like movies, music and pretty much whatever else I want. That, combined with the speed (I can copy roughly 20 gigs in the time it takes to burn a dvd) makes it a nice solution for me.

External drives are great for transferring large amounts of data, and as partial backup. When it comes down to transferring *more* than 4.3gb of data, it's going to be a lot faster to just plug a hard drive in, then to be constantly swapping out dvds, which are rarely read as far as hard drives can transfer (even over USB2).

I use my DVD burner to make regular backups of my work, but I also have an external hard drive for more immediate access and backup.
