Maxtor 40Gig 5400RPM and Windows 2000

I cannot get my Maxtor 40gig (94098U8) HD to work on windows 2000 pro

I looked in the device manager and the drive DOES appear, but I cannot find the drive in My Computer, I cannot FORMAT or PARTITION it because I don't see the drive letter!

I have the following IDE Configs:

Primary IDE
Master: IBM 10gig 7200RPM EIDE
Slave: Maxtor 40gig 5400RPM EIDE

Secondary IDE
Master: Mitsumi 4x8 CD-Recorder
Slave: Toshiba 32x CD-Rom

ne suggestions?
p.s. it's only win2k that doesn't recognize the drive... bios and everything knows the drive is physically there

use the disk manager to partition and format the drive.

admin tools -> computer management -> disk management

it should show up there.

OR you can use fdisk or other utils

when i try to format, it says the size is too big! how do i fix this?

If you use FAT as the file system the largest partition you can have is 2GB. Use FAT32 or NTFS if you want to create a larger partition.

friedrice4u: Try popping in the Win2K CD, rebooting and making sure your CD-ROM is set to boot before your HD. Then it will load up Win2K setup as if you are going to reinstall Win2K. Obviously DON'T mess with your current installation. Read the screens carefully and select a new install. It won't actually install at first, but it should detect the unpartitioned drive. You should be able to create a partition of any size within that drive. I recommend you then cancell out of install. Remove the Win2K CD and reboot. It should then have a drive letter which you can format within Win2K.

I know Drive Manager should be able to partition it within Windows 2000, but I had some trouble doing that as well. I know that my method works. Note that you must have a bootable CD capability with your BIOS and CD-ROM drive.
