Thanks.

How did you get 479GB? Should of formatted to around 465GB if its a 500GB drive.

I got mine today. Wow this is a LOUD drive. The loudest I've owned in the past 5 years. I'm a bit on the sensitive side (I'd love my PCs to be silent). But if you are at all like me, look for a quieter drive (probably the WDs).

I'm not really concerned about loud. Just that it wont fail. I guess I'll have to snag some next time this goes on sale...

yup... it's a LOUD one alright!
I got a 7200.10, Made in China.

I'll try to set the ACM to Quiet, but I doubt it'd do anything significant.

I wish I saw the noise report before I bought it!

If you guys want a quiet and cool 500GB SATA HD. The Samsung HD501LJ is on sale for $99.99 free shiped at Zipzoomfly.

I think this and the WD are very highly regarded by silentpcreview, but it's $10 more than this Maxtor deal.

Only thing, is some people have complained about the way ZZF packages their OEM drives for shipping, not much padding. Don't know if it's still true currently. I'm still waiting for this drive to drop a couple of dollars more.

Acoustic management has been disabled on the Maxtor/Seagate HDs since like the 7200.7 series. All the SATA version are set to performance mode, and the PATA ones should be set to quiet. This makes me hesitant to buy a Seagate SATA HD. I think they might have quieten down the HDs for the 7200.11 series, though.

I know dude... my other drive is a Samsung 500GB
Bought an OEM Samsung from newegg, but I was so disappointed at newegg.
It was not a brand new OEM, definitely a customer return or refurb/used one.
It came with poor packaging and the screw holes were no longer "virgin"

I think I'll buy another one from ZZF

I just checked and this Maxtor doesn't even support ACM!
Also don't forget to check the SATA mode on your drive
Mine was set (from factory) to SATA-150, easy to change by jumper but it's still a hassle.

It recognized it around 479GB. I have yet to format it since it is really hot so I'm thinking I need an enclosure with a fan on it. I didn't even format it when I had it plugged in using a SATA to usb adapter to plug it in.

Not to bad mouth Maxtor, I had bad luck, maybe. This year I had 6 Maxtor died (300GB -- 500GB), I had enough of Maxtor. I know, every brand has its share of dead drive; wish you guys have better luck than I did.

Well bruce, were they Maxtor manufactured drives? Because the 3 Maxtors I just bought/received via this deal are Seagate 7200.10's with a 3yr warranty instead of 5, and Maxtor on the label... STM3500630AS apart from the M, same exact part # as the seagates.
