I've said this many times,
all retail maxtor hd is ATA100 already long time ago,
amazon, staples, dell, etc all just use the info from the supplier,
the supplier hasn't updated the info.

when dell has 25% or 20% off, you could get this hd for around $102-108 shipped.

beware it's a quantum fireball plus AS inside,
if you don't like quantum hd, don't get this retail maxtor.
get oem/bare drive maxtor from other places.

Certainly. Some people just prefer retail over OEM is all. Newegg has a 40GB OEM bare IBM drive for $99 + $6 shipping. Amazon also does not charge sales tax to CA.

OD has the 40gig 7200 retail drive for $99.99+tax w/free shipping if anyones interested. There was a post on the OD 30 off 100 coupon link a day ago but is has been deleted from the posts. Someone might still have a link. I ordered the 40gig 7200. It has the ata66 model listed but I should be ata100.

Thanks for the post, but I don't see how this is a hot deal. You can get the same drive at Staples for $129.98 and can simply use a $25 off $100 coupon to bring it down to around $105 w/ free shipping.

so true. i just bought my 40 gig7200 for about $100 from newegg and I know of several other that also made a similar purchase at a similar price. i think it's a fair price.
