Price isn't much different at this site. Looks like its the older Atlas 10K II versions in the 1.6inch form factor. Its not a bad deal for 73.4GB drives, but I think I'll pass. The two 36GB Atlas 10K III SCA drives I have are good enough for now...

Much better reseller ratings here.

3.5LP refers to 1" not 1.6". I bet it is an oem drive and the warrany is with a2zcomp instead of maxtor.

I'd be careful of this one.

Model number doesn't match up with anything on Maxtor site.

Warranty is wrong.

Most SCSI U160 drives use a two-plug setup, a 68-pin data cable plus a regular PC power cable socket. These drives use the 80 pin SCA connector which combines data and power on one plug, which means that you have either a hot-swap case OR an adapter for each drive. You CAN do this, but it isn't the best way.

And then there is A2Z Computers, whose reseller ratings page says that only 16% of customers would ever shop from them again.

There are places to schrimp, but hard drives aren't one of them!

Well, as wintermute908 pointed out earlier, computergiants has not only the same 80-pin drive for $235 but a 68-pin version for the same price as well (TY073LK). No SCA-2 adapter needed which will save you a few bucks. Also, they ground ship free.

Is anyone here running these drives under XP? I'd really like to buy one or two of these, and I know there's issues under XP w/ SCSI performance (my current setup shows it). My question is, is anyone using a drive similar to these for video editing under XP? I need to make sure the ACTUAL transfer rate will be fast enough under Win XP, or I've just made a $240 mistake

The issues with SCSI and XP aren't resolved yet to my knowledge. I just went back to Win2k SP2 (SP3 has similar problems supposedly) and the latest patches. I use Stardock's Object Bar and WindowBlinds, and with those installed and configured right, you almost wouldn't know it wasn't WinXP. L8er.

The reason I am thinking it is a 1.6" drive despite the "3.5LP" text in the product description is due to the fact that every other site this drive is posted on labels it as a half height (1.6") drive:

1) Here
2) Here
3) Here
4) Here
5) Here
6) Here
7) Here
8) Here

Anyways, you get the picture... Its definetely not a bad drive, however. It just doens't fit in any of the SCA enclosures I have. Now if you are using an adapter, 80 -> 68 pin, (or an SCA enclosure that supports 1.6" drives) this wouldn't matter since you could mount the drive in a regular height bay (the kind a CD-Rom goes into). I, personally, would not buy the drive from A2Zcomp simply because of their terrible ratings. This drive can be found on many sites from $200-300 and its not worth taking a risk on an untrustworthy company. I'd recommend calling up Computer Giants and asking them a few questions, just to be sure.

I think the reason for the 1 year warranty is probably because these drives are either old OEM drives, reburbished, or out of warranty. The strange thing is that the description on the Computer Giants site says "FULL MFG. WARR" but then trails off. I'd definetely check with C.G. about that before ordering.

I have a pair of 73GB 10K II's and they're 1.6, don't know if they all were made that way or not. Check the pics here to see the size of 'em compared to a 1" one's Bason Computers. BTW, $229 there but listed as $198 on Pricewatch shipped free USPS. A better deal might be Computrade on a 10K III for $281 shipped. Don't know about the warranty, but it's a much better drive compared to the 10K II.
PC Pitstop has an IBM Ultrastar 73LZX, 73.4 GB, U160 10K, 3.5" LP, 68- pin for $199+ $5 Fedex ground shipping but it only has a 90 day warranty if want to go rock bottom pricing. I've ordered a couple from them before and they are okay.
