Quantum Atlas drives are quiet except in periods of heavy disk utilization, and they're still quieter than old IDE drives.

The question is, is this an Atlas 10K, 10k II or 10k III?
If it's just a 10k, it's going to be a little slow compared to what else is out there now.

Probably about as loud as a Raptor, if not quieter. It is 1.6" high.

Based on the model number, TY073JK, it is an Atlas 10K II, so I'd place the performance around that of a Raptor.

The Raptor is the WD SATA drive? Or does WD have a raptor scsi drive that is overpriced as well?

This was a good drive in its day, but for $150, you're better off with an ide drive of at least twice the capacity these days.


Also, this drive runs SUPER hot. From the pic, looks like an atlas 10K II. 1.6" half height, with 10 (TEN) disks inside, spinning at 10K.. can you imagine the power this thing draws (and resulting heat it gives off).

I got one of these a while back from unity for $160. It worked for 2 or 3 months, then i started getting unusual lockups, and the drive eventually started giving me random r/w errors. Maxtor RMA'd it with a atlas 10K III drive which has been running fine for the past 5 months or so.

So it turned into a good deal, ultimately, if I had to do it again, I'd prob get another ide of larger capacity for the $$$.

I had a 10K II, they are not that hot. Mine ran cool to the touch with a case fan blowing on it.

I should rephrase;

without any cooling they run extremely hot... with passive/active cooling, they run much cooler..

Still, unless your case is setup with a fan blowing directly on the HD, it will run very hot.

I ended up getting an external scsi case for my setup with 2 very powerful fans that blow air thru the case. Works much better than inside a computer case.

Good deal if you need one as a replacement drive, but for a new unit I would get an IDE with more capacity.

I think people are missing the point. This is a SCSI drive. It's about speed not capacity. But is this thing has 10 disks inside it, it's sustained transfer rate must be really low.

may be a better deal to get 2 50G seagates from the same place and RAID them for a few more dollars.
