Maxtor D740X 40 Gig HD and,.. a jet Engine

I recently purchased the 7200rpm Maxtor D740X 40 Gig Drive. I had been using a Seagate 30 Gig 7200 Barracuda as master (now slave), and what I've begun to notice about the Maxtor is it sounds like a jet engine when booting along with when idle. The strange part and the reason behind this post is it appears to sound less like a jet engine as time goes on. What i mean by this is, after about an hour the drive doesnt sound as loud as it had during the 1st hour (or im getting used to the jet sound by then). Has anyone else seen (or heard) this problem before, I'm wondering if the drive is possibly bad in some way and if I should be concerned. The jet engine sound is really a high pitched sound that just eats away at your mind, but seems tolerable after about an hour.

No, that's not tolerable. I say, your MAXTOR isn't working properly. Get an exchange ot RMA.

I have 2 of them in a RAID1 and they're almost totally silent. RMA it.

My Maxtor D740X in the first few weeks of use when it was brand new had a slight scraping sound when it was under heavy use however mine is very quiet now so I guess it has worn in so to speak,but "jet engine" no way should it sound like that.

my laptop harddrive sound something like that. I know there is somthing wrong with it. Im just waiting till there are no more 10gig'ers left so dell gives me a 20 .

It definitely shouldnt sound like a 'jet engine'.
I've got the D740X with fluid dynamic bearings and it's very quiet indeed, I seldom notice it at all. Event the regular model with conventional ball bearings shouldnt be as loud as you reported though.

well, mine is not the same model, it's a quantum fireball cr 8.4 (quite old in fact) and it always has had this whining jet-engine-like sound. it has been running ok for the last 3 years. but if the others who have the exact same hdd say it must be slient then something might be wrong
