I bought this from newegg for the same price. The performance is good on these, but noise is the same as earlier maxtors. These have a J on the end(...J2), so they're not using the fluid bearings. The fluid bearings have an L on the end. I heard that the ones with the L on the end are virtually silent.

According to Maxtor's Data Sheet all of the D740X models use fluid bearings.

I wonder if the J2/L2 ending are OEM/Retail?

I don't believe these are retail drives. If I remember right, the D740X is only OEM.

According to your data sheet, it looks like only the L models have LDB (liquid bearings).

Yes, retail comes with a cable, mounting rails, and maxblast software.

There is a minimal difference in sound between the ball and liquid bearing models. Go to this site if you want to read more about how little a difference there is.

Still a nice drive even though they are not quite, and a nice price as well.

I received an email from one of the Regional Sales reps and, yes, only the "L" suffixed drives offer the fluid bearing motors.

I think I'll still pick up a few drives and use them for RAID for Digital Video editing (if I ever find the time)

I have a maxtor 40GB 7200RPM ATA-100 (5T040H4) drive. Do you think it would be ok to get a d740x 40GB, and set a raid up with the two?

These are nicely priced. I picked up one of these this morning but forgot to post the deal here. I needed something to get my SX830 order over $100, so I figured I'd just buy a drive.

These are not the fluid bearings. the data sheet listed says it is available on all models- not that it was on all models.
Go to www.maxtor.com -> Desktop Drives (on left) -> D740X and you will see "L" denotes fluid bearings.
I have two of the D740X drives. They are very quite and VERY, VERY fast!!
This is a great price.
