You can do that sure, you'll have an 80GB 7200RPM UDMA/100 array. It's not a HUGE matter, however, you might be missing out on a few more mb/s transfer rates. All in all, it will still be a kick ars (LOL) setup.

Peace

One more note on the noise level issue. Below is a portion of an email I received from Maxtor:

>To the human ear, BBs will sound 2 to 5 times louder than FDBs.

> which get uncovered when we make the white noise quieter by using fluid

<< I bought this from newegg for the same price. The performance is good on these, but noise is the same as earlier maxtors. These have a J on the end(...J2), so they're not using the fluid bearings. The fluid bearings have an L on the end. I heard that the ones with the L on the end are virtually silent. >>

According to Maxtor's Data Sheet all of the D740X models use fluid bearings.

I wonder if the J2/L2 ending are OEM/Retail?
>>

bought a 60 giger wirh the J model number honestly the noise is not bad at all. I was expecting a lawnermower, but it's npretty quiet. Maxtor make great drives!!

I have one in my Big dawg rig and it is SILENT, can not hear it. Great Drive. I will order this next week after I sell my Little Dawg's rig and build a new one inside the SX830. Nice price for this drive, especially w/free shipping on both this and the case. Cant beat it!

Is your drive model 6L040J2 or 6L040L2 ?

kevman look at the document you misread and linked. It states clearly L2=FDB (fluid dynamic bearing), J2=BB (ball bearing).
hint: start reading from the top on page 2

I recently installed a D740X 20gb w/FDB and it is super fast (for ide) and quiet.

I just got this drive from Outpost delivered today.

I sure hope it works, because they didn't pack this thing well at all. It came double boxed, but neither of the boxes had any shipping materials to protect the drive from dropping/movement during shipment and we all know how well shippers treat our boxes
