I seem to be having some troubles with my hard drive. First of all, it is VERY loud. Clicking, whirring, whatever noise a hard drive could make -- This hard drive definately makes it.

I didn't know if this was a common experience with these drives or what, seeing as there is 600 + users online maybe one of them has the same drive or knows of these problems. It's not even 2+ months old.

Thanks =D

Does it happen all the time when the disk is accessed?
What does SMART data and windows event logs say?

SMART says it is simply healthy and okay.

I haven't looked at windows event logs, but that is a good idea thanks.

Mine is really noisy too and I think it has issues. I get crashes and freezes all the time. I knew I should have stuck with WD.

Maxtor's disk checker is not compatbale with Nvidia based mobo's. They say if you want to test it it needs to be removed and placed in a system that is compatable. That's really convenient. Any other testing methods to determine if my drive is having r/w problems?

I just got one.....I can't hear it.....maybe its my cramped case? So many wires cramped around the HD Area, but ya its silent.

I have the 250 gig version. It causes crashes and freeze ups all of the time. I am really getting sick of it, but I have had problems with Maxtor and Western Digital now.

It's hard to find a brand to trust, you know? I mean tons of people have problems with WD/ Maxtor/ Seagate

I guess buying hard drives is like gambling?

Meh, the only drive that failed on me was a 60GB Maxtor after 5 years, so I won't immediately stop buying Maxtor after that. But ya ALL HDs fail, just some have a higher failure rate, Maxtor is the highest. I hear seagate is the best for reliability.

Do you have a fan blowing over drives? I think it necessary for newer 7200rpm drives.

Ya consider Vantec HD coolers...I have them on all my drives, they keep temps nice and low, 10-15C lower in my case.

yeah, I have an 80MM sunon fan blowing directly acrossed them. It's been clicking for quite a while, and it's become such a problem that I couldn't even install windows XP on it properly. Sometimes bios doesn't even recognize it. It just boots up to my linux drive, a western digital 20 gig hard drive that works like a charm. Although all of my data on a 100 gig partition on that drive is some how, safe and sound.

Disk errors in Event logs? . SMART value for sector reallocations - should be zero
If both are fine then run hdtach read benchmark with nothing running in the background and see if the graph is a smooth line. If it dips alot, then its a sign that some bad sectors are around.

What makes you think it's the hard disk? Have you limited it down at all?

I haven't had any problems with any hard disk, except for this DM10 occasionally not being detected on my A8N-SLI Deluxe board. It rarely happens if at all anymore though, and to fix it all I have to do is restart twice, it doesn't bother me. Issues are very few and far between.
