Maxtor DiamondMax 9 problem

Just popped one of these on my board. This is supposed to be used as additional drive so all I did is plug it into sata socket.

Bios and Windows XP detects it, but I cant format it!

Called maxtor and warranty is expired. Tried using PowerMAX but it did not recognize the drive since of some Nvidia4 issues these drives have.

I was told I should do a low level format. Which software to use? Or any other ideas?

Also tried to install windows on this drive but same thing occurs when I tried formatiing in Windows. Basically it tries to do something but no results.

are you sure the jumper is in its proper place? When was the last time you used the hard drive? how have you tried to format it so far? and what exactly happens when you try loading windows onto it?
