i'd recommend getting the ata card even if you don't need it right now because if you purchase the hd and the ata card you get a $50 rebate from maxtor. if you use the $10 off coupon on the card and the other coupon for the hd it ends up with you getting the card for free and knocking an additional $10 off the hd (considering the $50 rebate). vroom

Perhaps an overlooked deal is the quantum fireball as 30 gig for around $100 after the $30 coupon. Checkout the main Anantech page for the link to the awesome review!

clarification....PM Staples Quantum AS 30 gig to Buy.com for around $128, then use the 30 off 100 coupon mentioned before. For around $100 plus tax (maybe shipping as well), you have a drive that is at least on par with the IBM and completely outclasses the Maxtor.

I just got the 30 GB 7200 rpm ATA 100 Maxtor drive for ~$85, and 2 Maxtor/Promise PCI ATA 100 controllers for ~$75, which after the rebates will become -$25.

So in other words, i got a 30 GB HDD and 2 ATA 100 cards for ~$60.

Smokin' deal in my opinion.

I might keep the second controller or just sell it later on.

HELL YEAH!!!

Diverdown- One of the Maxtor rebates does mention you need to get a 40 GB hard drive with model #'s starting with STO1, etc... even though the 30 GB hard drive does start with ST01. Incidentally, I found ANOTHER Maxtor rebate.. this one does not specify that you need a 40 GB hard drive... just a Maxtor hard drive kit. It seems like there are two similiar rebates.. they were issued at different dates and have diff expirations dates as well.

Hey2- I accidentally went ahead and pricematched/bought my HD at Staples without thinking that I had coupons back home to use. I went to another store the next day and according to the printable coupons ($10 off $40, $25 off $100), you can use them in-store, but only one per customer and so on. I ended up having to return the HD and card (to have it credited to my account) and afterwards, they went ahead and applied the coupons. They did mention they needed physical proof of a coupon.. otherwise I would've used the better coupon codes floating around somewhere.

-That sounds like an pretty sweet deal that you got. How are you able to apply two rebates (one for each card/HD combo) to get $100 off total? I think each Maxtor rebate for $50 off requires you to send in original UPC codes for each HD/card. How do you come up with a second hard drive UPC code? At any rate, lemme know how it works because that would be great if it works. Thanks.

Laxer: You are correct in your assumption. I got the 2 cards at staples for $50 each, and used the $30 off $100 coupon (the same one used on the HDD, except this was on a "different" purchase/different receipt ), which made it ~$75 with tax.

One thing though...if the maxtor rebate is only with hdd/card combos, i might go ahead and buy another hdd. heck, for $85, 30 GB is awesome! Heck, i could even raid 'em...but i don't need to.

Or i could sell the extra HDD. Hmm...there's so much i could do...

Thanks for the headsup.

PS: if you only want/need one ATA 100 card, you could use the $10 off $40 coupon, or you could buy some more stuff and use the $25 off $75 coupon. It's up to you.

Good luck.
