Did you try running a read test on the drive? On my 7200 RPM series 6800, the chip near the front (motor chips?) became as hot as 70 deg. C, and on both this drive and a series 40 so did the square "Lucent ARM" chip during sustained reads. I believe that all of these chips are still being used on series 60 and 80 Maxtors.

Went to Staples this morning and there was one left. Got it for $129 then pulled the $25 coupon. They applied it no questions. $104+tax out the door for $112. Got it home and the static bag had been cut open. The drive matches all the packaging but I hate this stuff. This type of thing seems to happen to me more than it should. Have to wait a few weeks to see if it works on my new DDR board which I haven't ordered yet.

Just a heads up... I have this drive and it's pretty loud. I just bought an IBM 75GXP and am waiting for delivery. I'm gonna pull the Maxtor since supposedly the IBM drive is a lot quiter.

To make this deal even hotter, at the b&m make a seperate purchase of the maxtor ata/100 card for 49.99 and use the 10 off 40 coupon and get the 50 rebate from maxtor for a total of $94 + tax for the hard drive and the ata/100 card

The IBM definitely performs a lot better. I have both, a Maxtor and an IBM. The IBM is faster and is definitely quieter.

Somebody asked a question earlier as to whether or not they need the actual printed coupon to get the discount at a B&M Staples. To be honest, it depends on the store. I know a couple of people who are able to just say the coupon code and they get the discount but the majority of us have been denied because we did not have the coupon. You should call your local staples store and tell them about your printer problem and see if they'll accept the code only, but if you have the printed coupon you can't go wrong. I was a victim and was denied the extra 25 bucks off because I did not have a coupon , now I'm having trouble with my bank, which didn't allow me to get it. Seems as though 14 "authorized" payments went through on my debit/credit card on the day I was supposed to get the drive. Altogether it equalled a sum that brought my balance way DOWN so I wasn't able to buy the much needed drive . I am soo pissed, if you need the coupon email me at vze28f9v@verizon.net. Problem is that I won't be able to get you the coupon until tonight, sorry about that.

UPDATE! At my local Staples, I asked them to enter BOTH coupons that were e-mailed to me (the $25 coupon and the $10 coupon). The salesperson tried it out and both went through! Therefore, I was able to get $35 off the $130 price (making the HD $95). Ask the salesperson to attempt to enter both coupons..
