This sucks. My Maxtor 20GB harddirve died again last night. This is the replacement two months ago for the same model drive that died. Ran the Maxtor disk program and got the same error code. Guess I have to call them and RMA this one as well.

Arghhhhh :|

Went through THREE WD Protege 20.0 gig drives in the space of 3 weeks. RMA'd all three with no problems, but I won't buy another WD. It's not just Maxtor. It sucks sending them back, but that's what warranties are for...

For some reason I notice certain PC's seem to eat hard drives, I have a feeling it's not always the hdd that actually just ups and dies.
there is one computer at my work that keeps eating great 20gig Fujitsu drives... I have never seen a Fujitsu drive die... they are awesome drives for reliability..
I have also seen very little problems with maxtor! only problems come with IBM and WD.
(WD seems to be getting better though)

I love my Maxtors, they are quiet and fast and reliable.. I am not saying replace your mobo, but I think there is something else sometimes causing hdd's to die, I am not exactly sure what, but when a PC has a hdd that dies, from what i have seen likely it will happen again down the road.... Maxtor rocks, I couldn't bring myself to knock them, great quality and reliabilty for a good price... even if I was having problems with their drives I'd be wary of the fact the drives may not just be dying necessarily on their own...

I don't know if what I have seen is proof or not, but it has to make you wonder.........

Crap! Their phone system is down when I called. I guess I will fill out the Online RMA form now. Is it longer if I use the online form instead of calling?

Jgtdragon,

From looking at your system specs, there is a good chance that you killed both drives.

AMD Athlon 700MHz @ 1020MHz

You are obviously overclocking your FSB...

Well that sucks, Jgt... For what it's worth, I'm on my sixth Maxtor hd (not including the number of systems I've built for others) with absolutely no issues.

I've had nothing but fast, reliable service from my Maxtor RAID array as well. What error code are you speaking of? Can't you just fdisk the drive in DOS after booting with a floppy and then format?

When the harrdrive died my cpu is running at 1000MHZ with multiplier at 10x with no fsb overclocking.

The bios said primary hard disk fail and the error code for the Maxtor power max program gave the error code K40s11.

Ahh...more information. So the BIOS is reporting the failure. Hmm..have you tried your harddrive on another IDE controller header? Perhaps 0 (or 1 if you're using that) has gone bad for some reason or the controller is not addressing it properly. The harddrive is set to master is it not?

A theory I have as to why harddrives fail is improper installation. If you don't secure your drive well enough in it's cage, it could rattle. Constant rattling of any operational harddrive would cause failure. This seems like a reasonable explanation to me, as I have a 75GXP which many say is notorious for failing. I have had no problems for quite a while now, and I download and delete things on a regular basis. Maybe it's just bad luck. Who knows...

Just went through the RMA form. They ask the same question on the phone as on the online form. I think the person just fill out the same form over the phone.

Ok, I got a RMA number now. The only lost now are the data on the drive and $5 shipping back to them. Luckily most of the data is backed up.

I tried it on my P4 system as well. Same problem.

The driive is installed very secure with four screws in a detachable cage. The drive will not move unless someone kicks the Tower.

I've got 4 Maxtors (2-40s, 30, 20GB, 7200 RPM) in my rig and they're great! The 20GB is 2 years old and has been run OCed all the time, the longest stretch being 132 FSB for nearly a year. (Then I switched to a higher multiplier CPU to give the system a break; only 114 FSB now.)

I know that older Maxtors were unhappy when OCed, but I've witnessed their stability. They're quiet (unlike WDs!) and they don't die!

IMO Maxtor does suck. I go through hundreds of HDs a year, IBM and WD are the best, but you can always get a lemon no matter who makes the drive. Maxtor has a higher rate of lemons though, I refuse to buy them.
