Compatible with 1394, i.LINK, and FireWire.

Go to Staples & do a search for item "443938" price is $199.98.
Add paperclips (item "ACC72380") for $0.17 to get your total over $200.
Apply the $40 off of $200 coupon (do a search).

Orders over $50 are shipped free

$199.98 + $0.17 - $40 coupon + $0 shipping = $160.15

edit Seems this turned out to be a 5400rpm Drive. Sorry for the confusion.

I don't think this comes with the firewire card, but if I recall correctly, Staples sales the Maxtor firewire card
for $49.99 and there may be a rebate form Maxtor for $50 if you buy both. At least, they were offering the
deal a year ago and I seem to recall numerous rebate forms at their website with several different expiration
dates.

Do you guys think this deal is worth it?? I am tempted, but I was thinking of just getting a usb 2.0 enclosure and a separate drive??

This is a 5400 rpm drive, not a 7200 rpm drive. Reviews I read of this drive noted that it was one of the slower firewire solutions available. (Do a search in google and you can find several reviews.) No doubt it's a great price for the size, but if you're looking for a high-performance drive this may not be the best choice.

You can read the datasheet with specs here.

Concidering most people use fire wire drives stricly for data storage, the 5400 vs 7200 RPM argument is a waste of time. If you plan to install apps on the drive, then its a different story (not many reasons to do that though). Rotational speeds in hard drives effect random disk access. In the case of a storage solution for a single user, coping data to and from the drive won't stress the drive out enough to visibly notice a difference between 5400 and 7200 RPM's.

Frankly if you are just using it for data storage, save your money and go for the 5400 version.

my two cents.

I agree, the main use for an external large firewire drive would be for backup storage, but couldn't find it on staples site anyway, may be OOS.

Again: There is more to a drive's speed than rotational speed. Do a google search for reviews on this drive, and you'll see that it is regularly rated as one of the slowest firewire options available. This was one of maxtor's first efforts at a firewire drive.

I've got one of the 40 giggers.. and it's really nothing more than a Drive with an Enclosure, just done up all fancy with Maxtor's colour's and logo. You can pop the cover off (voids the warranty of course), and replace the drive as you see fit..

Of course it is slower. But it is much speedier than USB (1.1, at least, and, IMHO, 2.0) and provides cheap, portable, fast external storage. I've long been a proponent of Firewire solutions and I wouldn't consider anything else for external storage. This is a steal of a deal. And, yes, you can replace the drive with a 120BB/JB, but watch the heat.
