Just curious, does SATA really offer much speed advantage? I thought I read an article a while ago that its really no better than ata/100, and won't be until the next generation of SATA comes out.

Good deal on SATA.
There is not really any speed advantage right now over ATA/100/133. But the advantage of SATA is that it doesn't run on the standard PCI bus. It has it's own pipeline for communications! So it won't hog the PCI bus, like regular ATA drives.

Well, actually, that depends entirely on the controller, and has nothing to do with whether the drive interface is SATA or PATA. In fact, most recent motherboards that support both, have PATA on a non-PCI bus, but SATA is provided by a 3rd-party integrated chipset on the motherboard, that is connected to the PCI bus. Some of the very newest chipsets just coming out, now do finally have integrated SATA support that doesn't use PCI bus bandwidth. But this is only within the last 4 months or so.

I think the biggest advantage is the smaller cables.

Biggest advantage is getting it off the IDE cables for DVD/cd copying.

My DVD burning rig. 4 2500NEC's and 2 seagate 160 SATA HD's is a error free rocket when burning to all 4 at once.
