I decided to buy a new HD but I can't decide which one:

Maxtor HD 160 GB DiamondMax Plus 9 7200 rpm SATA150

or

Seagate HD 160 GB Barracuda 7200 rpm SATA 8MB

Suggestions??

Seagate's 5 year warranty on retail drives is impressive.. just a thought.

I think it comes down to warranty between these two.

Seeing as how a Maxtor just died on me last week, my vote goes for Seagate.

(Coincidentally, it died just days before the warranty expired. If I hadn't been quite so lucky and if it had died a month later... I'd have to buy a new drive. Hopefully Maxtor's replacement will last for at least a year.)

I would definitely say seagate, I've had lots of bad experiences with maxtor drives, but I have yet to have a problem with any of my seagate drives, and they're much more quiet than the maxtor drives also. Seagate is definitely the better way to go.

After reading posts, reviews, and guides, I narrowed my choices to Western Digital or Seagate.

I bought a Seagate Barracuda 160G IDE this morning at Bestbuy for $69 after rebates. At Bestbuy.com it is back-ordered, but they had one at the store. I don't have the SATA choice, but I seem to remember checking out of curiosity if they had any rebates on the SATA, and I don't think they did. You might check if you're interested, though.

I vote Seagate.

Current poll statistics:

Seagate: 13
Maxtor: 0
Either: 1
Other: 1

Have you bought the Seagate yet?

Nothing against WD's drives (would use them almost exclusively until a month ago), but Seagate has been as much a favorite as any in the enthusiast community for years, and now that they are creeping back to compettive performance, still pretty quiet (and the 7200.8 should beat the P80s!)...they are looking good.
Then they one-upped everybody with a 5-year warrranty (June 1 manufacture date) on their mainstream drives.

Ditto that. I've got 7 Maxtor drives running right now and I never had one fail ... until a 3 month old Maxtor failed in my RAID 1 setup about a month ago. There was also a magazine article recently where the author was asking what's up with Maxtor drives as he had the same experience (except he had two new drives fail). I replaced both drives with Seagates as I no longer trust the remaining Maxtor either.

I sent the dead Maxtor 160 MB (ATA) drive in for replacement. That one had been manufactured in Feb 2004, so it was really new. They sent me back a 200 GB drive as a replacement (very nice) that had originally been manufactured in Aug 2002 (not very nice). I'm sure their remanufacturing process makes the drives as "like new" as possible, but I still think I got the short end of that deal. Something in there's already two years old. On the other hand, I've got four and five year old Maxtors that are still running, so maybe older is better.

At same or similar price you would be foolish not to choose Seagate with their new 5yr warranty.

I've built 30+ machines in the last 4 years and not one of the WD/Maxtors I've used has died AFAIK. I've used a much larger % of WDs as their rebates were pretty good. As of late, the high-pitched whine (after months of use) on the WDs was the greater evil than the crunchity-crunch seeks of the Maxtors. I would definitely go for Seagate if I had need for a drive right now but I have been using a pretty tasty Maxtor 160gb 8megger for about a year.

edit: I did not see SATA
