Well then...

That seems obvious isn't it? Maxtor it is!

Oops did I say that? I meant Seagate of course...;-)

Thanks for helping me choose y'all (that was a hard choice to make)!
The Seagate is on it's way.

I have owned oh maybe 100 Maxtor HD's and had a lot go bad over the years. But, the 3 year warranty always saved me money and I always dump or sell them on ebay when the warranty is almost up. Anyhow Seagate bucked the 1 year warranty crap and now the 3 year warranty with a really long 5 year warranty which either shows they are very confident in their hardware or they plan on going bankrupt, lol. OEM, drives also come with 5 year warranty at least Newegg says they do for the two 200GB SATA Seagates I purchased last week.

Edit: After what I said about the 5 year warranty I wanted to make sure my drives have the 5 year warranty and here is what I found on Seagates Website so rejoice all Seagate HD owners.

How do you make a good product even better? It's one thing to say that you make the best hard drives in the world. It's another thing to back up such a bold statement. Now every Seagate internal hard drive for PCs, notebook computers and entry-level servers purchased from an authorized Seagate Distributor and Reseller will be covered under our unprecedented 5-Year Warranty.

The new Seagate 5-Year Warranty reflects our dedication to not only bringing the newest technology and products to market first, but always ensuring the highest product dependability. Years of investments in R&D and industry-leading manufacturing processes, common design platforms, and advanced manufacturing allow us to deliver on our commitment to quality.

I am running 2 Maxtors at home now, no problem. At work we have had to replace all 8 Maxtor drives tin the Dell machines we bought a year ago. They have all been replaced with Seagate drives. When I upgrade in the spring I will get a Seagate SATA Drive.

LocutusX yeah, well probably not do that but it will force them to restore the 3 years warranty at the very least. First thing I said to everyone I know when the warranty changed to 1 year for most drives accept the more expensive ones was buy the more expensive drivers with the 3 year warranty one year is not enough warranty for a HD they go bad far to often. That is what lead me to look at other brands and the warranty the ofter and at what price I had to pay to get a 3 year warranty etc. Seagate is the clear winner right now.

I have been using a Seagate HD on a daily basis for 4.5 years now. It has never given me a problem, EVAR! Thier HDs are considered the most reliable by many...

Never used a Maxtor though.

Get the Seagate, and I have a maxtor, so that should be enough of a plug. The warranty is VERY impressive, and Seagates are still IMO the most reliable/trustworthy drives.

Seagate.

Just had a Maxtor 80GB fail after 1 year and 10 days.

As for Western Digital; I once had to call support for a drive that would not be found a new system or 3 other systems. I dl'ed programs you gotta run before even installing the HDD (which is retarded), and got nothing. After another call they told me 'oh, you need this file not on our website yet... we will email it to you'. The file they emailed worked, but I'll never buy another after having spent 6 hours trying to install a <5 minute piece of equipment.

My luck with Seagate hasn't been as good. I've had 4; the first was DOA out of the box 10 years ago, the second was purchased in December of last year and it died last month. I got an RMA and the replacement died while I was partitioning it and my fourth is about 3 months old and working fine.

Even with the 75% failure rate I have had with Seagate I won't ignore the reviews they are highly rated by numerous sites. Even with the glowing reviews I have vowed to stay clear of them; that's my choice, but I will say that Seagate's people and customer service are top notch. I made several calls and never waited more than 3 minutes to speak to a very real and helpful person.

I received my last RMA'd drive and promptly sold it the same day. I got my money out of the deal, bought a Samsung 160g and it installed perfectly. It's my first Samsung so I'll give it a shot and see how it holds up. I used to use Maxtor and WD, but after reading tons of info about failures I wanted to go another route.

Did anyone ever consider a poll?

Anyway, Seagate for me. Granted the Maxtors I've had haven't gone bad, but the Seagate is yes, quieter and faster.
