My Raptor makes so much noise when seeking/writing, that I can feel the vibration through my desk! And that's with rubber grommets in the HD cage. I SERIOUSLY regret not buying a Seagate for the main drive for this system. My Seagate Baracuda's were damn near impossible to even hear.....

Personaly I'd go w/ the seagate in this case. Reliability > all for HDDs and I'll trust a seagate drive over a maxtor any day of the week + in the real world you would not notice much performance difference between a Maxline III and a 7200.8. A raptor would provide a noticible improvment in performance but is much more costly.

However remember Seagate have an awesome 5 year warranty ,so that makes the decision harder.

I saw this what is not pointed out..people at storagereview have reported reliability issues with DM10...I know a small but vocal sample....

also I own a Neo 2 Plat and many at msi forums were having trouble getting the Maxtor 250gb or > which had 16mg cache to work with this mobo...some fw revision(for the HDD) was around but not easily available that may fix the issue

I opted for the Seagate 200gb 7200.8 drive...installed without a hitch on the Neo 2 Plat

Why this mobo would have a possible issue with DM10 16mg cache drives I have no idea...some speculate it had to do with non NCQ support...I emailed MSI and they felt an NCQ drive should cause no issues....

BTW I emailed about the Seagate 7200.8 and Maxtor DM 10 and asked for any bios or fw revision that may help...they indicated nothing

the Maxtor firmware update was obtained from MSI which got it from Maxtor according to the person who recieved but refused to let anyone else have it....

No one else has been able to find it that I am aware but this was 2 weeks ago now

IMHO the speed of the Seagates exceed my old DM9 160gb 7200 drives and they are quieter but what pushed me over was the reports of ?? incompatible and reliabilty issues.
with my recent Maxtor failure which was retail drive with 1 yr warranty..I switched to longer warranty knowing I would never see the performance differences

Also performace wise these drives seem fast

FYI: using the NForce 3 speed test in device manager and HDD speed test

Seagate 200gb 7200.8 on SATA3 & 4
Burst speed: 120-123mg/sec
Sustained: 68-70mg/sec

My old intel setup : Abit IT7 MAx2 rev2 using Highpoint controller with sata 3(using sata-pata converter):
Maxtor 160gb ata133 7200rpm 8mg cache
sustained speed: 107mg/sec
sustained: 58-59mg/sec

I am just giving some data I have...I realize the DM10 will be faster than DM9

My first post to this forum was in the rant against a maxtor drive I purchased, so I'll continue it here in an addition to this thread. I ordered a maxtor Diamondmax 10 from zipzoomfly (who made the hit list for their sorry excuse for customer service). The drive arrived DOA. The replacement drive which I had to order myself would not format past 69%...ergo defective as well. maxtor is sending out another drive themselves for this last defect. I effectively have 3 drives charged on my credit card until this whole thing get sorted out. Oh if I could only turn back the clock. The only solace I find is that there are some souls, albeit a few, who approve of maxtor, as it looks like I'm stuck with it because zip-scam-fly charges a 15% restocking fee for even defective items. My other unfortunate woe is that I am now discovering that the Asus A8n-SLI has apparent cooperative issues with the Diamondmax drives. Another thing that I posted in my original gripe...was that the Diamondmax and the Maxline III appear to be the same sdrive, as my first drive had a Diamondmax 10 sticker placed over top of a Maxline III sticker. the manufacture dates were 3 months apart...as to say, the DM 10 sticker said December 2004 while the Maxline III sticker underneath said September 2004...so, maxtor, which was it? anyway.

guac: Yea, I read your sad story before in another thread, actually.

Could it be that the first drive really wasn't dead, but that you experienced the incompatibilities with the A8N-SLI? (Which I heard wouldn't detect the drive with some BIOS versions).

About the Maxline III and DiamondMax10; Well, I'm not surprised about the sticker thing, since most people here seem to believe they are the same drive, just with different warranty.

I do not understand the issue with the maxtors and the ??NForce 3 &4 chipset ...

Moreover, there should be an easy fix and you would expect by now for maxtor to be selling drives that are updated to fix the issue

retail maxtors come with 1 year warranty and retail seagates come with 5. samsung drives are super quiet however and come with a 3 year warranty.

this what I do not understand why should retail have a shorter warranty than oem...IMHO if you make a good product(oem and retail are the same drive different pckg) you should back it the same

Maxtor lost my business on my last HDD purchase because of this and DM10 16mg cache issues on Neo2 Plat...I had a retail drive die...1 yr warranty..drive was 1.5 yrs old...I was pissed( I bought it not realizing they changed the warranty)

Maybe I should consider samsung but I did not ....I went with 5yr warranty and Seagate new 7200.8 drives

I've had a Maxtor 80 gig since 2002, put it through steady abuse (I'm a constant download/installer/un-installer/mover type of guy), and it has yet to cause me any problem.

My WD 250 died in 6 months. My next couple of drives are going to be Seagate.

I think the older DX740 line was very reliable..the newer DM9/10 seem to be problematic per internet forums

I have very good experience with Western Digital. I've handled a bounch, (booth installed in PCs and Xbox'es) and I haven't seen one die yet.

I have seen many IBM drives die (who hasn't?) but have avoided Maxtors (and will continue to do so, thanx to this thread).

I've had 4 WD HD's die on me within 12months!

2x 80Gb, 1x 160Gb, 1x 200Gb.

I'm going to stay away from WD for this generation.

I'm going to get 2x 250Gb Seagates as they are 'suppose' to be more quiet and I can hear my 4x WD humming a bit. I want a 'quiet' pc!

Oh, and I just ordered a 7200.8 too... Seagate has always been good to me, from my lowly 2.1GB SCSI drive of yesteryear till now, and hopefully with this new one.

Ill admit though, it took a while to get used to 'good performing' IDE drives. Before my 75GXPs, all I had was SCSI...

I have had nothing but bad things to say about WD, Maxtor, Quantum (yea, I had two bigfoots) due to failures over the years. I have had the most problems with WD though with a total of four failures over the last two years (it sucks)... Fortunately for me they were for friends computers that they had my build so I didnt have to put up with the loss of a drive for a week...

Seagate rocks!

actually, to add to the 'cheated fate' syndrome, I originally purchaced four of these drives. The two I am using now are in the RAID 0 array (typing on them right now), and the other two are humming away silently in my other two computers (right next to this one)... out of the four I bought, not a single one has given me ANY trouble, and I have been using all four continuosly. The machine the RAID 0 array is in is my video editing station. That array sees a LOT of activity, and given the bad press/bad luck with these drives, I am almost kinda feeling like IBM has done ME right with these. I dont know why they havent gone, and I expected they would long before now.

to make matters worse, I used to run all four in a large RAID 0 array before breaking the set up for the other two computers, and that saw file server use for an FTP that I had which serviced more than 2TB/year (I ran the site for 18 months, just after I bought the drives) for such things as Linux ISO's and educational material when I was in school. The FTP was in use for other campuses, and there is no telling how much was transfered ON campus via file sharing.

All I know is that if anything would/does come out of that law suit, I would have NO room to claim any of it... and im glad!

With most HDs you will either get crap or a great one. I've got 3 maxtors in my system now and they run great. I RMAed one one times (it hadn't failed... I found out later my motherboard was the problem) and it came very fast.

Great hard drives... great support... cheap... Maxtor is superior. Unless you want 10,000 RPM then WD is best.

Ditto. Apart from I still have my 1.6/1.7Gb Diamond Maxtor drive in fully working condition 9 or so years on.

According to WD, Im getting 4 years warranty also. Seagate do 5 year but WD havent let me down yet.
