While not the exact same Model, my Maxtor (16Mb Cache also) is both fast and quiet.

I've so far had pretty good luck with Maxtor Drives. I even got an old 6.8G from 97/98 that's still running fine in one of my Systems.

I'd worry most about reliability, and I've had horrible luck with Maxtor, so I vote Seagate.

I doubt you would even be able to tell a difference in performance...

Never had a Maxtor work for more that 2 years (3 drives). never had a Seagate fail (5 drives, oldest is 7 years old). This is your Hard Drive...your data.

Still, Maxtor has 5 year warranty...

Maxtor, for $10 more you get a bigger HD and a better performing one. They both have 5 year warranty, so no problem.

samsung actually has bad performance but are quiet and reliable.

This Maxtor should be great in reliability.
The maxline series is designed for 1 million hours MTTF and 24/7 operation because they needed to work in servers.
If these drives fail a lot, I am sure Maxtor can get into serious trouble with coporate lawsuits.

I have a Seagate that's been running for 7 years. Good stuff.
I have a 7200.8. Good stuff also.

I have a Maxtor running from 7 years ago too.
I have a DeathStar from 5 years ago that's died 3 times and I got it RMAed twice.
I have a Hitachi 7K250 that's been alive for 1.5 years, and another one that's ~3 months old.

I been using Maxtors from day 1 on my desktop computers. Never had a problem and always backed up my original. Now I just clone my main and never worry about loss data. I have used Western Digital drives and found them quite reliable. On my laptop and external HDDs, I only use Hitachi's and the occasional Toshiba.
Familiarity and reliability determines what HDDs like Maxtor usage, but Maxtors are not the choice of many computer store builders. Computer builders here prefer Western Digital first and foremost, something about problems with Seagate and Maxtor breakdowns.
When it comes to multiple HDDs, Maxtor is my forte.

Maxline is the best quality Maxtor drives. People here complaining about Maxtors breaking up on them prolly had some cheapo ex quantum drives break up on them.
I have 6 maxtor drives running at work and 3 at home. Been using Maxtors for years and never had any of them fail on me!!!

My vote: MaxlineIII FTW!!!

Seagate's equivalent of Maxline drives would be the NL series.

But the 7200.9 is the newest Seagate generation and would probably outperform the Maxline.

I perfer Maxtor myself, never had a problem with them and my drives range between a year and 5 years old. My seagates otoh.... both the drives fail to be found on boot sometimes, and the 40gb likes to randomly spin down on it's own and not come back. The 200gb has so far been extremely reliable in the HTPC though. And I won't touch Western DIgital with a 20ft pole. As far as I'm concerned, they're in the same category as the Deathstar.

Actually if you read some reviews you would see that the Samsung has really good performance.

It's not very good at heavy I/O but most of us don't run databases. It's the best workstaton hard drive out right now in the 200-250GB range.

Nope. There isn't any performance increase in the .9 series.

No more Maxtor for me, I lost almost 30 gigs of video and jpg's when the last one puked with no warning whatsoever. There was stuff there I've never been able to replace. I didn't have a DVD burner at the time, and was too slow burning all the CD's I would have had to to back it up. If it was a random thing, that would be ok, but since NOT ONE of the Maxtor drives I've had has made it past 2 years, and then when one of the warranty replacements for 2 of those died instantly, and the other in 2 hours, it's kind of soured me on the brand.
Never lost a WD, and the one Seagate I lost was probably due to a power surge. BTW, 7 of the dud Maxtors died after I bought a UPS.

The only Maxtor drive I would take was a free one, long enough to put it on Ebay.
