I actually read a review a few days ago comparing all the 120 gig drives with 8meg caches. At the end of the review the author actually confessed that the Western Digital came DOA. The Maxtor had lots of bad sectors(?) The author criticized manufacturers of putting out shoddy products. The Hitachi/IBM was the big surprise. The seagate got the usual quiet but slow review.

U might want to do a seach for this article!!

western digital = best performance, best warranty, noisy
maxtor = balanced
seagate = very quiet

i personally have had many western digital drives fail on me, but most people seem to like them. my vote goes for maxtor.

against all common sense i ordered a wd1200jb which i'll get tomorrow - and be asured that if there's the slightest thing wrong with it it goes back and i'll never buy WD again. (This is my first try at a WD HD...) The thought about failing HDs etc...hmm...it's just bizarre...never happened to me ever since i build computers, and i had seagate, maxtors, fujitsu HDs. Because i just depend on the reliability of a HD. Damn....imagine all data, the OS, pictures etc. lost because of bad quality control...this is something which (imho) just never should happen...unthinkable...

Otherwise i can only very much recommend Maxtor - never had anything wrong with my 40gig one. I'll see how my new WD does tomorrow.....(gulp...)

Western Digital drives are fine... I've had 2 of them go bad, but I still use them... Right now I have 5 of them.. so far all are working flawlessly... and I've got another one on the way

I have never had a problem with my WD drives, i have 2 120 in my computer, 2 160 in my game server computer, my brother had one 120 in his computer and my friend just bought a 200GB just a few days ago. All are running no problems and are fairly quiet. Though it can be hard to hear them at all due to all the high speed fans.

I have now, the 80gb Maxtor and WD SE, plus a 120gb WD 8mb cache (3 platter). The 120 is the quietest (and fastest)followed by the Maxtor. No problems w/either brand but the WD's do have a 3 yr warranty vs. 1 yr for Maxtor.

Note: some WD120's have 4 platters, which could mean that the extra spinning platter could generate more noise.

I have used both 120gb's of Maxtor and WD and havent found a problem in either. i have used the WD 120gb for a longer time though..but i am sure the maxtor will be no problems either. both look to be good drives

Got a Seagate 7200.7 120GB and love it. Had 2 1200JB drives and they are noisy as heck! If it doesn't bother you, they are great drives. Noise is critical to me w/ my new system, so this drive fits perfect.

Western Digital = fastest
Maxtor = most widely available and usually cheapest
Seagate = most reliable (IMO) and definately the quietest

im about to RMA my WD1200JB...

That just doesn't make any sense. If we're talking dying HDDs and RMAs he should pick the one with the lowest failure rate.
I have a Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB. At idle it's completely silent. Well if you have really quiet fans I think that you might hear something, but I can't. So if noise is a factor you should pick a Seagate. WDs are indeed more loud, and that dreaded whine - it's not as bad as my old Quantum Fireball but it's still audible.
