Maxtor warranty, my drive had 3 years, now they say 1 year.

When I bought 3 Maxtor 120gb 8mb cache drives a year and a half ago they had 3 year warranties. Now that one is dying today, I checked up on it again. It says OUT OF WARRANTY. WTF. The box says 3 years but Maxtor can just change it as they feel fit?

What can I do? It begins clicking as soon as I try to access it. I havent even used it except today when I backed my stuff up to it and it died in the middle of backing stuff up. Really blows!

can't really answer your question. but just to let everyone on this board knows.. Maxtor blows ass..

I have worked at a placed called EXEL, where they do RMA's for maxtor drives (internal, external) and every 2 days, they recieved 2 bins full of drives, the bins are about 4.5 feet tall and same wide. every minute one person comes thru the door, with a package ready to be RMA'd. and mind you, this is for one town only in CANADA. population of about 900k if not even.

The drive is still spinning so I know something is going on. It no longer clicks after windows quits trying to access the drive, but it quit showing up in My Computer.

Do you still have the box it came in and the documentation? If it says 3 years, it's 3 years. If Maxtor refuses to honor it, punish them by not buying any more Maxtor products.

Just call them and tell them what happened. I highly doubt they will refuse you an RMA.

More seriously, Samsung are cheap, quiet, and good. Seagate are quiet.

I put it in the freezer for about 25 minutes then popped it in and was able to copy some of the stuff. When it crashed I realized that it was due to a AppServ (apache mysql etc) that was installed on the drive in the past week. So I restarted and then immediately after windows finally booted I uninstalled AppServ. I was able to back everything up and it "seems" to be running fine though it made some slights noise when copying files. But it has been copying files for the past 30 minutes no problems. Hopefully it is fixed for now.

OUCH... well i had a wd 18gb scsi drive that started clicking and failing... was going to just buy a new hd and saw on the site you could check out the warranty ... 4 years and 10 months ... i had 2 month left ... they took it back asap and gave me a 120gb ide ...

maybe you should call them up ... get a fax .. fax them your box and receipt with the date circled and the drive #. How can they refuse ? that's like fraud right?

I just got 4 years warranty on my WD SE 200Gb according to the WD Warranty Checker. Deal and a half I think

Id still go for WD over Seagate but thats my personal preference. I still have a 420mb Seagate HDD that still works and that has to be at least 8 years old so I dont have any bias against Seagate.

Neither Apache nor MySQL would crash a harddrive.
If it is indeed acting up, as opposed to Windows simply not starting, I would Pariah's advice and call them.
Like he said, it seems pretty unlikely that they'll refuse you an RMA as long as it says 3 years on the box, I don't know about the US, but that would be illegal around here.

Raptors are Great, however, you pay a premium for them. May as well go SCSI if you are going to be spending that kind of money for such low capacity.

Yup, Seagates got that nice 5 year warranty now. I've also had good luck with Hitachi drives thus far. Granted, I have had a 120GXP IBM drive die horribly on me - Sound clip of its death throes - but it has been replaced with a nice Hitachi drive.
My secondary system also uses Hitachi drives; 5 of them actually. They're good performers, and are very quiet.

Normally in the warranty policy statement, manufacturers claim they reserve the right to change the policy at any time without prior notice, or deny the warranty. There is no protection to consumers.

I don't agree. The manufacturer cannot change the warantee on a product already purchased. the warantee in effect at the time of purchaase will remain in effect.

Maxtor branded retail hard drive kits will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 1 year.
Maxtor external hard drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 1 year, with the exception of the Maxtor Personal Storage 3000LS and PS3100 drives, which have a Standard Warranty Period of 90 days in North America.
In EMEA, Maxtor external hard drives and Maxtor branded retail hard drive kits will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 2 years.

If you have proof of sale, and the original box stating that it has a 3-year warranty, they have to honor it. Otherwise, threaten to sic the FTC on them for fraud. Might drop a line to your state AG's office too. This is a good example of why it's always a good idea, when puchasing a new HD, to punch in the serial number and look up the warranty on the mfg's web site. Sometimes they get them wrong, and it's usually easier to get them to extend it to the full period, before it dies and the warranty expires, rather than after.

I'm experiencing the same thing right now from Maxtor. I have to call tomorrow for two drives. One for sure should still be good and the other should be okay till next year of November.

I bought 3 drives within a week of each other, all were supposed to have 3 year warranty. I looked them up yesterday, only 1 of the 3 is good until March 2006.
