I have a Maxtor 30 Gig @ 7200 Primary and a Maxtor 20 Gig @ 7200 RPM Secondary and love them both. They are probably the best HDD I have ever bought.

I have 2 western digital drives. One is on it's way to western digital because it died on me

I had a 40 gig western digital 7200RPM hard drive. It was a solid and fast hard drive, till it died on me just about a week ago or so.

I also have a 60 gig western digital 7200RPM hard drive. It's really fast also, I just hope it doesn't die, because their really nice drives.

I recently built two systems for friends, one w/ a Maxtor DiamondMax +60 30G and one w/ an IBM 60GXP 60G. I've been running IBM's lately but I have to say that Maxtor is the quietest drive I've experienced.

Go for the IBM 60GXP on newegg. Very nice price and the best seek times. I use the DiamondMax Plus60 HDs from Maxtor and don't have problems with them. I've used the WD HDs too and liked them just as much. It all comes down to price and what's your favorite company.

I can't comment on IBM (don't have one). I have a Maxtor 30 gig 5400 rpm ata33 and a WD 30 gig 7200 rpm ata100. Obviously the WD is going to have a higher burst transfer rate being ata100, but for seek time they are virtually equal (WD should be faster being 7200 rpm but it is not) and for sustained transfer the Maxtor is actually a little faster. This leads me to believe that the Maxtor drive is designed better than the western digital. So my recommendation is to go Maxtor.

In order of preference:
1. Maxtor ( I am currently running 4 of them in 3 systems, so far they are great!)
2. IBM (no personal experience but hundreds of posters can't be wrong, 75 GXP notwithstanding)
3. Western Digital (based on my personal experience? ...At least they have a decent RMA program)

Maxtor, IBM, Seagate, WD, whatever.. You are probably splitting hairs in performance, noise and reliability between these brands. I say go with whatever you can get a deal on when you are ready to buy a drive.

BTW.. I wasn't too impressed with Maxtor's CS. The guys that I spoke with were sort of asses.

I'd take a maxtor over WD and IBM any day. I've had problems with both WD & IBM, but my maxtor's have worked great. Granted others have had problems with maxtors ...

I have had a lot of experience with both Western Digital and Maxtor hard drives and found both to be very good. Very few bad drives and easy to setup. I don't have much experience with IBM, so I can't say...

I have two 75GXP's for 7 months without any problems. Is it a bad drive? Not for me at least.

Hehe.. I have a Quantum Fireball in my other machine and it sounds like a toilet bowl. Great drive as far as speed and reliability as far as I can tell. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the top brands mentioned here. You're bound to get occasional failures with any brand IMO.

BTW.. The only drive that I ever had fail on me was a Samsung. They had quick turnaround on a replacement and a good warrantee, but that didn't help much considering that I lost a lot of information. This was before adequete cheap ways to back up your information.

I've been successfully using Maxtor drives for the last 3 years or so without any problems.

When I worked at a tech store in 1997, we got an entire batch of WD drives that were bad.

IBM's are supposedly fast fast fast but pricey and the 75's were having some problems (do a search, there's a couple threads on this).

Well my experience with IBM 75gxp's are ...don't buy them. I got one 75gxp 30gb from a computer show (OEM)...it had bad sectors. I got another 75gxp 30 gb later (RETAIL)...bad sectors. I am currently in the RMA process again. Sucks that they'll only give u 75gxp's in place of the 75gxps you return.
